Refurbished police HQ in the centre of Bristol, minutes from the bus station, shops and pretty harbourside - a Sawday’s Community Champion

It’s a hostel, so not for those who want hush, posh or privacy but it couldn’t have a friendlier vibe. You’ve a choice of places to sit and work or chat: the reception has a busier buzz with folk wandering in and out; the sitting room is downstairs and quieter with interesting books. Upstairs you’ll find eclectic art donated by local artists and a mix of private and shared bedrooms and bathrooms.

The ethical credentials here are impressive: the business is owned and managed by YMCA Brunel Group, and any profits made are re-invested in supporting vulnerable young people in the region. They do a brilliant job at offering those in need with assisted housing, youth work, childcare and facilities in health and wellbeing.

The Wing is all about community, so the feel is civilised and warm. There’s a shared kitchen area for simple cooking or help yourself to tea and coffee. Larger groups can have catering organised for them too. It will suit single travellers, couples and families equally well, it’s excellent value and the city centre is on your doorstep.

This place is one of our Sawday’s Community Champions – not-for-profit organisations receiving subsidised Sawday’s membership as recognition for their support of causes and communities.

  • We're a few minutes walk from St Nick's Market - for amazing street food, local produce, fresh juices and more.
  • Bristol Harbourside is a quick stroll away - a great place to hang out on a summers evening - or for a bracing walk on a crisp, bright winter morning. Head to Arnofini gallery & bar, Society Café and the Watershed independent cinema and café/bar.
  • The MShed is the museum celebrating Bristol's history - with a range of interactiv'e exhibits. It's free to get in, and is ideal for families and kids - particularly on wet days in the city.
  • Walk up towards Clifton and Park Street and head to Brandon Hill for amazing views of the city. If you've got a head for heights you can climb Cabot Tower - or stay at ground level and feed the squirrels!
  • Don't miss Wapping Wharf for more amazing eateries, local produce, bakeries and indie shops. Head to New Cut Coffee or Little Vics for coffee and cake.
  • King's Street is unbeatable for traditional pubs, craft beers or fancy drinks and dinner - on a pedestrianised street it's especially fun in the summer.
