A converted Victorian schoolhouse with a glorious oak bar, an impressive selection of gins, hearty food and attractive bedrooms

Read guest comments

The sandblasted brick walls of this famously dog-friendly old schoolhouse rise to raftered, vaulted ceilings and large windows pull natural light into every corner. Shelves of gin hover above fat radiators, cartoons and photos nestle amongst old school paraphernalia, and oriental rugs sprawl beneath an auction lot of tables, pews and chairs.

The glorious carved oak bar dominates the main hall and apart from the malted charms of Cholmondeley Best Bitter and other local cask ales; a staggering 366 varieties of ruinously good gin to discover, with the aid of a well-thumbed guide or one of the charming staff. Study the many events on blackboards while sharing a traditional pub and seafood board followed by their legendary steak and kidney pie.

Rooms in the old headmaster’s house behind are calm and civilised with all the comfort you need. Gin tastings can be booked on Saturday afternoons.

"Stayed one night on way up to Cumbria. Lovely welcoming pub with a gorgeous bar The food and friendly service very good . Our room was lovely too but the bed could have been better. We will go back there another time for sure."

"Staggering in through pouring rain we were warmly greeted and immediately invited to sit by the fire with a cup of tea. After settling into our comfortable bedroom we went back to the bar and restaurant area, had an excellent meal that included slow roast belly of pork, fish pie and Cholmondley Eton Mess and slept soundly after a tiring journey. The following morning we had an equally good breakfast and a long and interesting chat with the owner, who happened to be sitting next to us eating his own breakfast. This seemed to sum up the laid back atmosphere of such an interesting setting."
