Chapel House Portholland - Self-catering in Cornwall
Portholland, Saint Austell, TR5 2PU, Cornwall
England,
Reino Unido
Your approach down winding, narrow lanes leads to an artist’s retreat. Lose track of time walking the coastal paths and wildlife spotting; after a day spent exploring head home to stretch out in the open-plan living and kitchen space. Tinkle on the piano, dive into the pile of games and books and stoke the wood-burner.
Walk all day then return to open the bottle of wine waiting for you – choose between two sun traps outside and watch the gently crashing waves.
The beach is your garden and is mere steps away - take a blanket and enjoy your breakfast with a side order of sand in your toes. The best way to start the day. Lay your head in simple rooms - the luckiest can see the sea from their pillow.

Local points of interest from Gabriel Amherst:

Gabriel Amherst:
- Our quiet seaside hamlet has no shops but East Portholland has a little café, Pebbles. Veryan Post Office and The Spar/Texaco are nearest. Get groceries delivered by the Cornish Food Box company; buy locally caught fish, lobster and crab from Curgurrell Farm Shop.
- Da Bara, a fabulous artisan bakery and café, is a 10-minute drive. Walk an hour along the coastal path to the Ship Inn at Portloe or drive there in 10 minutes. The Lugger at Portloe offers ‘high end’ dining and is nice for an evening drink.
- A little further along the coast is the Nare Hotel, great for afternoon tea, an evening drink or a meal at the Quarter Deck. The King’s Head is a favourite destination of my family and Chapel House guests. They serve excellent local food and the fish menu is extensive.
- The Lost Gardens of Heligan are a 15-minute drive, and working fishing village Mevagissey is a short drive from there, with a bustling harbourside - the ideal place to go to for fish and chips and ice cream, plus boat trips for mackeral fishing.
- National Trust properties nearby: Trelissick, reached by the King Harry Ferry; Lanhydrock, near Bodmin; the gardens at Caerhays Castle, open to the public in spring, featuring a world famous collection of camelias and magnolias.
- If you are fan of Rosmund Pilcher novels or the German TV adaptations, it may interest to know that Chapel House was used as a film location in August 2019! The title of the film it appears in has just been released and is called A Teaspoon of Love.
