Pretty, thatched, perfectly round: a romantic village bolthole with retro touches. Grab flip-flops, leads and run the dogs on Pendower beach

Read guest comments

Standing like sentries guarding the village pub and green below are two whitewashed 1820s roundhouses with thatched roofs and crosses – believed to keep the devil away. Ingenious how everything fits so neatly within the curving walls in this cosy, quirky hideaway that’s full of local art and retro touches.

Step out from the kitchen extension with a morning espresso, park yourself on a lounger and watch the seagulls swoop in the pretty cottage garden. When night falls, soak in the roll top bath, then retire to an enormous bed under a vaulted ceiling.

Bring bicycles, dogs, kit for the beach and walking boots for the South West Coast Path; the Roseland Peninsula is awash with secret coves and seaside restaurants.

Local points of interest from Ian Rose:

Puntos de interés sobre la región de
Ian Rose:

  • The Hidden Hut is an hour or so's walk along the coast path, perfect for lunch or, if you can get a table, supper on one of their feast nights.
  • Walk down from St Anthony Head to the beaches at Great Molunan or Little Molunan. Great views over the Fal Estuary and Carrick Roads and maybe have a swim.
  • Freshly caught crab, hand-picked and ready to eat, scallops and whatever fish has come in with the boat, from Curgurrell Farm. Wonderful with Da Bara crusty bread and Camel Valley sparkling wine.
  • Walk to Melinsey Mill via Pendower Beach, take tea and enjoy their home-made cakes, or some quiche with a glass of Betty Stogg's, brewed by Skinner's Brewery in Truro.
  • Pop over to Da Bara bakery cafe to pick up amazing bread (we love the sourdough), pastries and pies, and fantastic coffee - they have specials for dinner once a week too.

"We probably only live around 12 miles away from Veryan but have always admired the round houses so when we got the opportunity to stay in one, we were delighted. It’s a very quaint cottage with a lovely welcoming feel to it . We had a comfortable stay and would highly recommend it. It holds everything you need and more. Perfect location for walks and two fab beaches. And the pub was great also. Good all rounder "

"This is the third time I have stayed in this beautiful cottage. It is very much a home from home, very cosy, with all mod cons and very comfortable to stay in. It is in an idyllic setting right in the coast a short walk from two stunning beaches at Carne and Pendower. There is a lovely local pub who offer take out food and a post office/store who offer fresh bread and pasties. The Cottage has a small garden which is lovely to sit out in the sun. Do visit Curgurrell Farm shop for local fresh fish and homemade goods as well as the wonderful Hidden Hut in Porthcurnick beach. I love it here "

"Stayed for our honeymoon, immaculately clean, beautiful house and so comfortable. The tech was so useful on the day we didn’t go out! Just amazing to be able to stay in a great area with a great house. Can’t sing it’s praises enough!"

"This was our third visit to The beautiful Round House. We had another amazing week & Joey & Betsy loved all the new toys! Mega thanks to Ian for providing such an authentic, quirky, cosy & modern home from home & Jono for making sure all is 'just fab'. "

"This was our third stay at Round House East - such a delightful and special place. Mixture of sun and showers did little to spoil our activities - walking the coastal path, boat trips to Falmouth, train to Truro and boat back, boat to Fowey from Mevagissey, dinner at The New Inn (twice), cream teas (twice!), fish from local farmshop, morning coffee at the local hotel by the beach and more! The cottage itself is comprehensively equipped and lends itself beautifully to peace and relaxation."

"Another fabulous find via Sawday's, the cottage is extremely quiet and comfortable and well equipped, both for humans and dogs, the location for the beaches and walking couldn't be better. Highly recommend!"

"It was lovely to be back at the cottage, it is so relaxing here. Our labradoodle Claude has had a fabulous first visit to the coast and as always we have had some wonderful meals at The New Inn. Hopefully it won't be long before we are back, thanks for giving us such a lovely place to stay."

" We've had a great week - exploring old haunts - we last visited this area 25 years ago. Loved eating at The Watch House in St Mawes and an aperitif on the terrace at The Idle Rocks is spectacular. Also the Hidden Hut is fantastic for lunch. Makes the walk there almost a treat."

"Such a lovely house - thank you for all the little extras. A perfect home from home. We have been so lucky with the weather this week and have seen Cornwall at its best. Walking on Pendower and Carne beache, river trips, meals in The New Inn - so friendly - visiting galleries (Veryan Gallery highly recommended) and just sitting in the lovely garden. All with our little Westie who was welcomed everywhere. A week was just not long enough!"

"What a lovely place to stay, it feels like a home and not a holiday let. Thank you for letting us share your home. The weather sadly wasn't as good, sunshine on the first and last day, and a lot of smelly wet dog in between - stunning countryside and great walks."

"Our second stay at this wonderful Round House. All as we remember and a few new items too! Really enjoyed trips to the Lost Gardens of Helligan and Caerhayes Gardens. Mist enjoyed running/playing on beaches at Pendower/Carne. Recommend visits to Mevagissey, St Mawes and St Just in Roseland, also Porth, for great walks along Towan Beach. Good food at The New Inn, Plume of Feathers at Portscatho and Fountain Inn, Mevagissey. Looking forward to the next visit."

"We enjoyed the collective salmagundi of art. The Round House East was wonderful, the Web site does not do it justice. We would recommend a visit to Charlestown, Mevagissey and Portloe. The beaches at Pendower and Carne are ideal for dog walking. Hope to return in the future. "

"Once again a lovely welcome at the Round House, our third visit. Blessed with Spring weather and even storm Doris could not dampen our spirits. Shamal loves the beaches and this year the tides were kind so lots of sand for him to run and play with other dogs (he is from Dubai!). Good food at the Roseland Inn, Philleigh (Sunday lunch) and the King's Head at Ruan Lanihorne. We have had such a delightful stay here at the Round House - a real home from home."
