George and Dragon - Inn in Cumbria
Clifton, Penrith, CA10 2ER, Cumbria
England,
Reino Unido
Award-winning head chef Gareth Webster does perfect justice to the slow-grown breeds of beef, pork and lamb produced on the Lowther Estate – and you'll find lovely wines to match. Ales and cheeses are local, berries and mushrooms are foraged, vegetables are homegrown and the menus are comfortingly short, with the addition of fabulous Sunday lunches.
The long low coaching inn has been beautifully restored by craftsmen using wood, slate and stone, and painted in colours in tune with the period. Bare wooden tables, comfy sofas, intimate alcoves and crackling fires make this a delightful place to dine and unwind; old prints and archive images tell stories of the 800-year-old estate's history.
Upstairs are 10 bedrooms (all dog-friendly) of varying sizes, two with roll top baths, all perfectly decorated. In summer sip a glass of something cool in the pretty garden while you choose what to eat. You're a hop from the Lakes.

Charlie Lowther:
- The George and Dragon is situated in the heart of the Cumbrian countryside, on the edge of the Lake District close to Lake Ullswater. The surrounding mountains, rivers, lakes, wildlife and history make this an idyllic spot to visit.
- Much of our produce for the menus at the George and Dragon is grown and reared in the gardens and fields at our sister establishment Askham Hall. A restaurant, luxury accommodation and party barn are also available here.
- In 2019 the owners also acquired the Queen's Head Askham, just a short walk away from Askham Hall. With six spacious bedrooms suitable for families and a restaurant serving healthy hearty food, it is the perfect resting place after an invigorating day out.
- Visit the Lowther family Estate and Castle and gardens, within an easy walk or short drive from the George and Dragon.
- The George and Dragon is situated in Clifton village located on the side of the old A6. Once the main highway north – before the M6 was built – this road is now much quieter.
- There are a number of nearby woodland trails and the famous Rebel oak tree, where the rebel army of Bonnie Prince Charlie was defeated and driven out of England. Clifton marks the site of the last battle to take place on English soil in 1745.
