Breakfasts with sausages from home-reared rare breed pigs, a big log fire and relaxed friendly hosts. Acres of garden and woodland paths

You are ensconced in the quieter part of the Lakes and have independence in your own seventeenth-century wing of this Elizabethan manor. Once a fortified Pele tower, it's a fascinating historic house yet very much a lived-in family home with a wonderful atmosphere. The wing, known as Kelly Cottage, has an airy bedroom with a separate sitting room with books, maps and squashy sofas. Beds have patchwork quilts, windows have stone mullions and all is peaceful. Henry gives you sturdy breakfasts in the great hall: sausages and bacon from the free-range pigs, eggs from the hens and jams from the orchard. Children will have fun - animals to feed, garden toys galore and woods to roam - and dogs are very welcome too.

Henry & Anna Howard:

  • Would you like to stay somewhere where the breakfast bacon and sausages come from free range rare breed pigs in the paddock, and the eggs from the chickens roaming the garden, with jams and marmalades made from our own produce? Look no further!
  • Would you like to stay somewhere where young children and dogs aren't just allowed but are welcomed? Our own young children Nicholas and Lucy love making friends with visitors, both two and four-footed!
  • Would you like to stay somewhere with a garden whose history goes back centuries, with a walled orchard, an utterly tranquil location and views over to the Pennines and Lakeland fells? Our garden is a haven for birdlife and red squirrels too!
  • If you can tear yourself away, the local village, Greystoke, has a great pub; the Lake District and Eden Valley are just down the road, and there are easy day trips to the Yorkshire Dales, Hadrian's Wall, the North Pennines AONB and into Scotland.
  • We're handy for the increasingly popular local events such as the world-famous Dalemain Marmalade Festival; PotFest in the Pens and the Park; Hutton-in-the-Forest Horse Trials, and the Lakes Chilli Fest - all within 5 or 6 miles.
  • We're only 10-15 minutes from the M6 (junction 40 or 41) so if you're heading to the Highlands or taking the high road to England we're a perfect stopping-off point! We're just off the coast-to-coast cycle path too.

"We loved it here. Henry and Anna are delightful and welcoming hosts and the house is amazing! The rooms truly unique and Elzabethan with history oozing from everywhere you look - and all in a quieter area of the Lakes. Our dogs loved it too - and were made to feel very welcome! Simply perfect! We will be back....! "

"Special, atmospheric place with beams, hidden corners, wonky floors and many stories from different historical periods. We stayed in the 17th century Kelly suite, with lots of character, space (a little chilly) and freedom to come and go. Particularly enjoyed delicious dinner (special free offer) and hearty breakfasts with very friendly, musical hosts Anna and Henry in their fine baronial hall. Lovely quiet retreat but easy reach of Ullswater and routes to Cockermouth etc. Who cares that the mobile signal didn't carry here!"
