Heavenly walks start from the door – then it's back to a cosy wood-burner, and bathrooms made for lingering. High in the hills above Dovedale is a handsome 19th-century cottage swathed in wisteria, a former blacksmith's workshop. There's a walled garden at the back (lawns, shrubs, trees, French tables and chairs), a stylish New England feel within.
The space has been beautifully designed, with open-plan living downstairs, a bathroom and a twin, and a dreamy bedroom with a big shower up the runner'd stair. From the porch you enter the boot room, then the dove-grey kitchen, a chef's delight, and the sitting room, charming and immaculate, with a grey wool sofa and contemporary mustard furnishings and cushions, a renovated stone fireplace and logs on the house.
Bedrooms are fresh and sophisticated, with a quirky dash of vintage. Best of all? The George lies across the road, a gastro-pub for excellent food – book ahead.
