An 18th-century fisherman's cottage with garden at the end of a cobbled row, for happy seaside holidays with superb beaches nearby

It's peaceful here, down a pedestrian-only street facing allotments, but you're only a short walk along history-laden narrow lanes (some of the buildings are Elizabethan) to the mouth of the estuary, the bustling quay, arguably the best ice cream in Devon, proper fish and chips, crabbing, boat trips and independent shops. Inside is more spacious than it looks, with plenty of seating, a cosy wood-burner in the sitting room and a TV for rainy days.

French doors open onto a tidy garden with a seating area, Weber barbecue, an astroturf lawn and a summer house – although you're overlooked by neighbours it'll still be a fine spot for an evening meal or glass of wine. Two very comfortable bedrooms are up steep stairs and the lovely attic room has gorgeous views over rooftops to the estuary. The two bathrooms are immaculate.

Enjoy sociable meals in the light-filled open-plan kitchen/dining area or walk 10 minutes to The Royal George pub.

Puntos de interés sobre la región de
Amanda Robertson:

  • Appledore, steeped in a rich seafaring history. Wander the labyrinth of charming narrow streets with pastel coloured mariner cottages, hidden cafes, art galleries and quaint gift shops. The Yard, voted in top 5 devon restaurants, our favourite hidden gem!
  • The bustling quayside, 3 minutes walk, catch a boat across the estuary to the sandy shores of Instow, take a thrilling rib ride round the coast or simply sit and watch the boats go by with a deli delight from John's of Appledore and a Hocking's ice cream.
  • Northam Burrows, picturesque walk or cycle. A beautiful semi wild landscape with grassy plains, marshes and wild horses, intertwined with Royal North Devon golf course, one of the oldest in England. Open to all! Flanked by the sweeping sand of Westwood Ho!
  • Flanking Northam Burrows is Westwood Ho! beach, 2 km of beautiful sand, perfect for surfing, boogy boarding and picnicing. There’s a cafe to the sand dunes towards Appledore and a large car park. Saunton Sands, Croyde and Woolacombe, close by.
  • Book a kayak or Paddle board adventure along the Torridge estuary, all abilities catered for. Hire bikes and cycle the Tarka Trail from Bideford, once a railway line, now a flat 180 mile path, winding you through unspoilt countryside.
  • Visit Clovelly, another picturesque fishing village. Once owned by the queen of England and now privately owned. Wander Clovelly Gardens, brows the craft workshops and enjoy a freshly caught fish dish at The Red Lion. Even lobster straight from the harbour
