Edric's Farmhouse - Self-catering house in Devon
Smallridge, EX13 7JN, Devon
England,
Reino Unido
The ancient house was built in the 1500s (although an even older house existed on the site before the Domesday Book) and there are fine Tudor beams, fireplaces and panels, beautifully restored. Spread out in the beamed sitting room, chuck another log onto the inglenook fire and send teenagers and gamers to the TV room - those who seek total peace also have a snug with board games and jigsaws. Upstairs bedrooms (children will adore choosing which staircase) are delightfully quiet with well-dressed beds and views.
Down ancient stone steps find a beautiful, light-filled kitchen with all the gear (and lots of books) for committed cooks, plenty of space, a long table for convivial meals and a south-west facing wooden balcony for sunset watching over woods and corn fields. The woodland garden has ping pong, badminton, a trampoline and a fire pit - even a treehouse.
Walks start from the door and you're close to the South West Coast Path for hearty hikes.

Local points of interest from Catherine & Robert Walker:
Puntos de interés sobre la región de
Catherine & Robert Walker:
- Beaches: the wonderful Jurassic Coast is 20 minutes away with its great selection of local beaches - sandy ones, big empty pebble ones and fossil hunting ones. Learn to paddleboard at Charmouth, go on a fishing trip at Lyme Regis.
- Food: Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall’s River Cottage is a couple of miles away. Many other great places to eat out - from fine dining to beach shacks. We can recommend farm shops, vineyards and other places selling the best of the local produce.
- Walks: you’ll find Ordinance Survey maps in the house along with suggestions for walks from the front door and further afield. The South West Coast path is a favourite - options for gentle strolls or more challenging hikes - and stunning views.
- Days out: plenty of local attractions for kids – Crealy Theme Park, Pecorama, Wildwood Escot, Axe Valley Wildlife Park. Plus visit National Trust properties like Killerton and Branscombe. Or hire bikes to explore the country lanes and local pubs.
- Local towns: nearby Lyme Regis is fun all year round – quirky shops, cafes, mini golf etc. Bridport is also great to wander round – including for antiques and art. Local markets in Axminster on Thursdays, Bridport on Saturdays.
- Garden and games: stay home for badminton, trampoline, table tennis, swingset and tree house in the big garden. Widescreen TV, board games, jigsaws etc inside.
