Meadow Barn at Bottle Farm - Self-catering in Devon
Wellfield Hill, Axminster, EX13 5UT, Devon
England,
Reino Unido
Drive past the owners' 17th-century farmhouse and into your own courtyard. Here you'll find Meadow Barn and an attractive wooden store room opposite. Walk straight into an open-plan space with a double bed at one end, a sofa in the middle and the kitchen along one wall. It's not huge but exceptionally high ceilings make it feel spacious. Big bi-folding doors and Velux windows let the light flood in and underfloor heating keeps you cosy.
You'll find eggs from the farm hens, biscuits from Moores Biscuits down the road (makers of the famous Dorset Knob), a loaf of homemade sourdough and all the basics. Ask Alice about buying their homegrown meat and charcuterie - they also have a mate with a micro-brewery nearby and can do tastings. The gravelled garden round the back has a table and chairs and a firepit with logs (and marshmallows) provided.
You're at the foot of the National Trust Lambert's Castle for superb walking and views over the Marshwood Vale.

Hugo & Alice Shuttleworth:
- We make organic charcuterie on the farm. Try some Devon salami or culatello while sipping sparkling wine made by friends down the road, or a beer from the microbrewery which is just visible on the farm across the valley.
- Bottle Farm sits at the foot of Lambert's Castle, a National Trust hill fort that rises over the Marshwood Vale with spectacular views to the sea. Walk on down to the beach at Charmouth if you are feeling energetic!
- East Devon is a foodie hotspot - do a cookery course at River Cottage or Trill Farm, visit local vineyards and try a supper club or restaurant. We are happy to point you in the right direction for some hidden gems.
- Bridport's bustling Saturday market is a great place to spend the morning - sipping coffee, checking out the antique and vintage quarter and soaking up its laid back atmosphere.
- Go on a fishing trip with Harry May down at Lyme Regis, or hire a little motor boat from Simon at Beer and try your hand at catching some mackerel for the barbecue. At Charmouth you can learn to paddle board - or hunt for fossils on the beach.
- Alice used to lead walking trips in Patagonia and off the beaten tracks of Spain. Now she is an expert on local walking routes and will happily show you where to go whether you want a gentle stroll or a serious hike.
