Glass-and-timber doors bathe you with light, gaze at big skies and the river Dart lapping. Sublime year round, it's one of our favourites

The river laps at the edge of your bed and you bathe in light. Or so it seems, with nothing but water and sky visible through the great glass-and-timber doors at the end of the big open space that is North Barn. It is awash with light and colour, gay with the easy good humour of Pedro and Jilly, architect and artist. Cook in a galley kitchen (well-equipped), sleep on a low platform, curtained for privacy. Slop about on the big wooden deck, with nothing but a sliver of greenery 'twixt you and the river. Paint, sketch, read, walk, or lie in bed all day and gaze at the Dart and its bobbing boats and wading birds. Sublime in summer, cosy with wood-burner and sofas in winter, this is one of Alastair Sawday's favourite places and is not the formica-type squeaky clean sort of spot the modern-living lover may hope for, but it is loaded with character and many love it so much they come back year after year. The area is awash with 'attractions', but you may prefer to wait for low tide and pick your way along the foreshore to the restaurant/pub at Tuckenhay. Absolutely perfect for two (and a child).

Nicki Gray:

  • Dartington Hall nearby with gardens open to the public - good pub and culture in the Great Hall and barn cinema too. Well known for the Dartington Literary Festival and Summer School of Music.
  • Boat-hire & sailing available in Dittisham, The Ferry Boat Inn and the Anchorstone Cafe both very good - and the village shop that sells everything! Go across the river at Dittisham to Agatha Christie's National Trust house - Greenway.
  • Dittisham to Dartmouth by river ferry is fun, and steam train rides from Dartmouth to Totnes and back - also by River cruise boats.
  • Nearby Sharpham House in Shaprington has wine & cheese making/tasting and a good alfresco summer restaurant.
  • Art Gallery and art courses down the road at Coombe Farm Studios ... and Jilly's sculpture studio is next door.
  • A beautiful walk along the river to Tuckenhay pubs is about 50 - 60 mins - bring your wellies ! Dittisham is about 45-50 min walk.

"Wow, a absolute gem! A place I hope to visit again soon and I cannot list all the wonderful things about it. Such charming hosts and beautiful setting by the water. I renovate old building, so delighted in the thoughtful details that had gone into making this such a special place. Sitting outside and watching the sunset with the sound of the water and ducks in the background……. simply delightful."

"Stunning! I am a photographer and nature lover. When I arrived not only was there the most breath taking view of the estuary but the decor and ambiance of the barn was so much more than I expected. One of the most relaxing and beautiful places I have ever been. I could not recommend it highly enough."
