Canoeing on the Tamar, valley walks galore, with the woodland garden a sea of daffodils in the spring. A magical self-catering hideaway

Read guest comments

It's lovely here, so peaceful in your own private cottage perched above the Tamar; the views over the river are glorious and steep steps lead to the shore and a little jetty - borrow a canoe and paddle up stream. Rowers, geese and herons glide by on misty mornings; the woodland garden is full of spring bulbs, vegetables you can pick, free-range hens and chattering guinea fowl.

Settle on the cushioned window seat in the sitting room with toasty wood-burner, books, art and family photos; pewter jugs on a deep slate sill brim with flowers. The kitchen has a lived-in, charming feel with a cosy Rayburn. Sip coffee on the sheltered terrace that catches the morning sun. The light-filled bedroom has a comfortable bed, thick curtains and that view to wake to.

Delightful Trish can give you routes for good walks, lend you a map and suggest places to visit, boat trips to take. Nearby Tavistock has independent shops and a Saturday market.

  • On the border of Devon and Cornwall, the Count House is perfectly placed for exploring both counties. Cothele, Saltram House, Lydford Gorge, Castle Drogo, Antony House and Landydrock are all within easy reach and The Eden Project is just an hour away.
  • Explore the River Tamar by canoe or fish for bass from the jetty just below the cottage. It's the perfect spot for dogs to swim and there's a hose and towels available to wash them after. Mooring facilities for large boats are half a mile down stream.
  • Dartmoor is just 20 minutes drive away with wonderful walks and many good pubs. Walk a circular route from The Elephant's Nest and then enjoy a delicious lunch in the dog friendly pub. Or borrow bikes and explore some of the many off road trails around us.
  • The north and south coasts are both about 1 hour away with rugged clifftops and secluded coves. Try surfing on the north coast or head south to the Rame Peninsula and enjoy fantastic views, maybe a swim at Whitsand Bay and lunch at The View restaurant.
  • Cook a feast in the dear old Rayburn or treat yourself to a meal at the Horn of Plenty, Endsleigh Hotel or River Cottage Canteen. There are some wonderful pubs locally and a regular farmers market in Tavistock to gather supplies for a picnic.
  • Join the scenic local train branch line in Bere Ferrers, a 30 minute walk away. Travel over the spectacular Calstock viaduct or arrive in Plymouth in 25 minutes and wander the historic cobbled streets of the Barbican or take the ferry to Mount Edgecombe.

"Not sure anything we write would actually do justice to this little piece of heaven on earth. A truly wonderful midweek break for us and our dogs (Archie & Keira) and thoroughly recommended..... many thanks Trish ( and Rags) "

"The most perfect holiday cottage with beautiful views of the Tamar. Trish and Jeremy were wonderful hosts. The area is great dog walking territory. We will most definitely return."

"I was in need of a week of relaxation with my dogs and the Count House did not disappoint! What an absolute gem of a place; the cottage was beautiful, just like a home from home and there were wonderful walks right on the doorstep. The evenings we spent relaxing in front of the fire or sat on the window seat with a book overlooking that stunning view were absolutely idyllic. The Count House is good for the soul and I can't wait to return! Thank you Trish!"

"We arrived late at night and on arrival we thought we were at the wrong place, it seemed so big for just 2. As we opened the door, the experience got better and better. Trish had made a fire for us, the rayburn was on and it was deliciously cosy. The bed was so comfortable, the pillows gorgeous and so our first night was perfect. The next day we awoke to the most superb views straight from the bedroom over the Tamar and onto the hills across the water, not a person or house in sight. The place is lovely, not at all cramped like some places for 2 are. Highly recommended."

" I am currently sitting in the idyllic cottage looking out at the water and feeling very blessed that we found this tranquil spot. Trish is so welcoming and the cottage is a home from home for our week stay. Our little puppy (6 months old) is having the best time investigating the gardens under the watchful eye of Trish's beautiful collie. I would recommend this place highly, for the walks, the peace, the warm welcome and the views. We have had many great walks on the moor followed by some great pub grub. The perfect holiday!"

"I felt as if I'd stumbled across this idyllic spot by some magic twist of fate. I stayed as a B&B guest in the main house, as the self catering cottage was full. Gorgeous views of the river and surrounding woodlands. Expanses of all calm water seen from every window. Peaceful quiet broken only by the birds calling or the braying donkeys or Rags the lovely sheepdog saying hello. As an oasis of calm with wonderful food, warm hospitality and endless footpaths to explore the Devon countryside - or drive across to Cornwall... South Hooe is an inspiring haven, the perfect writer's retreat. "

"A truly tranquil and magical place to stay. Peace and beauty surround you as you tune in to the estuary and wildlife. The count house is a beautifully presented , unique and much loved retreat. Trish is a delight too and welcoming without intruding. We cannot wait to return. "
