A peaceful and unpretentious spot for a digital detox with long walks up on the moors and fabulous views from the top

Read guest comments

A hideaway surrounded by moors, woodland and fields. Escape here to switch off your phones, read, write and have long walks in Dartmoor National Park. The setting is magical, secluded and peaceful; sit and admire the views and watch the sun go down from your little terraced garden.

Hugh and Liza are the kindest people. They leave a generous welcome pack of homemade organic bread, milk, eggs and butter – and you can order Liza’s homemade granola. They grow their own veg organically, which you can buy (in season) and the water comes from a spring. The old barn has been converted simply and comfortably into an open-plan space with a Rayburn for winter warmth, practical kitchen area, sofa and king-size bed. Hop downstairs to the bathroom – and a single bunk bed tucked in the corner.

Stock up and spend your whole time here without using the car. Walk up onto Dartmoor - from the top you can sometimes see all the way to the sea. If you do fancy a break from cooking, there are a handful of pubs within five or so miles. Return to marvel at the stars, sleep soundly and then wake to a burst of birdsong.

"We first visited Easdon Cottage in 2000 and have returned six times to stay in the cozy Barn which feels like a home away from home for us. Hugh and Liza are wonderfully accommodating and helpful and a visit to Dartmoor has all the feeling of a spiritual retreat for us. Peaceful and beautiful, yet there are ample opportunities for invigorating hikes in the countryside. In fact, you can walk right out the door of The Barn and hike up onto Easdon Tor -- a windswept and lovely piece of countryside. If we could return to The Barn every year, we would do just that! "

"Perfect place for a peaceful few days of walking, reading, eating, snoozing and enjoying Dartmoor in all it's glory. You can walk for miles straight from the house. Hugh and Liza are wonderful and welcoming, the little house is warm and comfortable, the bath is blissful."

"Incredible peace and quiet in a beautiful setting. Saw a barn owl from the window and deer in the local forest. A wonderful sense of being hidden away and yet within easy reach of so many highlights of Dartmoor as well as several villages. The converted barn itself is warm and extremely cosy. Perfect place to either snuggle away from the hurly-burly or use as a base from which to explore Dartmoor. If you really need it, mobile reception can be found just a few hundred metres up the path and there are some delicious pubs and restaurants nearby in Moretonhampstead, Chagford and Widecombe."
