Enfolded in gentle Dorset hills and surrounded by trees, a perfect wooden hut for 2 near beaches, River Cottage HQ and many beautiful walks

Read guest comments

Through dappled woodland, down a drive swathed with wild flowers in spring to the most romantic, tucked away wooden retreat with stunning views over meadows dotted with Herdwick sheep. You're quite alone and not overlooked so you'll feel free as birds.

Inside is warm, unfussy and welcoming with plenty of squishy seats, a sweet kitchen area with a warming Aga (lit in cooler months) and all the stuff even a demanding cook could need. Books, maps and a wood-burner with plenty of logs make rainy days happy too, so hunker down and plan your next outing.

Bring bikes and join The Marshwood Vale which passes the top of the drive, explore Charmouth Forest with walking tracks in multiple directions, visit micro-breweries, gin distillers and vineyards, drive to Lyme Regis (12 minutes) for Hix oyster and fish. Beaches (10 minutes) are grand for fossil hunters, Burton Bradstock has the marvellous Hive Beach Cafe. Return to a sundowner on your veranda and watch the stars, and bats, come out.

"We had an amazing stay and were made to feel very welcome by Mark and Sue. They went out of their way to make our stay enjoyable, in particular providing us with a travel cot and baby bath for our 5 month old baby"

"Amazing Hideaway which we can't recommend enough. The Hut is beautifully decorated and has literally everything you could want - The Aga provided gentle warmth and fantastic toast throughout our stay. - on the couple of cool nights we had the wood burner provided masses of heat. The Hut provided a fantastic base for our visit and truth be told we could have spent the whole break without going out and we would have been quite happy - There were Deer and Birds to view a plenty, at dusk the Bats came to flit past the windows - and oh! what a glorious view of the night sky. - What a great place!!"

"What a truly special place. Set in secluded surroundings, it really a great place to unwind and refresh. The views are amazing, the walks fantastic and the accommodation rustic and full of charm. Close enough to society to have things to do but far enough away for an extra special relaxing romantic hideaway. An absolute gem of a place that we shall return to for sure. And an extra special gesture of yummy cake warming on the Aga for when we got there. "

"Stayed here in early March and the perfect place for a couple with dogs! It's incredibly peaceful, fabulous walks, great local pubs - we had a wonderful time. Thank you"

"In addition to the positive comments above you will (weather permitting and it did for us) be able to enjoy DARK SKIES. No cloud, no moon, no artificial light and the sky is just amazing. Take a guide book and look into the past. You might see the present in the shape of the ISS passing overhead. Other highlights. Fresh fish bought in Lyme Regis. The amazing Dansel Craftwork Gallery in Abbotsbury (take money!). The beach and collapsing cliffs at Charmouth. The Olive Tree in Bridport. More nuthatches than you've ever seen (encouraged by birdseed)."

"Ultimate bolt-hole. The Hut is cosy, self-contained and fully equipped with all you need. Thoughtful touches & helpful owners. The English countryside in full glory, owls, deer, woodlands, hills. I came solo this time but will come back with my husband another time, it lends itself to romance. It's called a hut and it is made of wood but this is a stylishly and creatively built hut with lots of space arranged with great thought and care. Lots of great walks without needing to get into a car and Lyme Regis, Axminster, Bridport, Jurassic coast plus much more a short drive away. HIghly recommend."

"A perfect place for a very much needed break from our busy lives. Thank you Sue & Mark so much for creating this awesome haven! Welcoming, homely, blissful perfection from the incredible handcrafted hut to the breathtaking uninterrupted rolling views. The biggest bonus was the safe garden for a crazy dog and plenty of walks straight from the door. We will be back in the winter to test out cooking on the aga!"

"We stayed at here for a week and would have wanted to stay forever. It's a very pleasant and well-equipped house in a quiet, rural setting with lovely views. We had beautiful weather, so we used the terrace a lot. There's always a place to find in the sun or the shade.. But would the weather have turned bad, then there would have been a lovely woodburning stove and comfortable seating to make the most of a relaxed day in. Its strategical location for daytrips to Lyme Regis, Devon etc. is superb. The hosts are very nice folks and they, the house and garden are very dog-friendly. We'll be back!"

"We loved the photos and description of the Hut on the Sawday's website, and the reality did not disappoint! We travelled from Australia to check out the Dorset countryside and Jurassic Coast, and had the most wonderful base from which to do it. It was a pleasure to stay in Mark and Sue's special place, and they made us feel most welcome. Lots of lovely features, from the flowers on the table to the Aga keeping us toasty warm at night. We looked across the valley to Coney's Castle, which proved to have the best bluebells we have ever seen - well worth the walk! What a great location."
