A serene restaurant-hotel on Chesil beach, with a perfect view of the big blue sea. How restorative can a hotel be?

Imagine sitting in the shade on a hot summer's day with a cool drink overlooking the bay, sunlight dancing across the water as far as the eye can see. Rolling hills shoot north towards Dorchester, while the view east follows Chesil Beach, 20 miles round to Portland Bill.

Sweet peas and roses tumble from table tops and torchères, walls of glass flood big rooms with light, and the bar offers treats to walk-weary dogs. After a day's blast of sea air, come home to elegant paintings and Zoffany colours, books, games and snazzy cocktails, and bedrooms with far reaching sea views. As for the food, chef Seldon Curry delivers a daily-changing menu of imaginative modern classics and lovely local wines. The attention to detail is inspiring.

Small, sophisticated and serene, this so-called boarding house is the finest seaside bolthole in Dorset. You may need to book weeks in advance.

  • There are seaside and countryside walks for all seasons and all levels of keenness, fabulous old castles, hill forts, churches and historic buildings to explore. On warm and sunny days there are BBQʼs, picnics and swimming to be had on the beach below.
  • Chesil Beach is a renowned fishing location with bass, cod &mackerel caught from lines cast from the shingle. Sea fishing & scuba diving are hugely popular in the area, with charter boats running regular trips all year round from West Bay & Lyme Regis.
  • The striking beguiling sea-viewed links of Bridport Golf Club are a mile away and there are other local links and land-locked courses for the addicted ball-beater.
  • The nearest town is Bridport, whose markets every Wednesday and Saturday sell everything from farmer’s produce to antiques and plants.
  • Visit West Bay just down the road for fishing trips, Weymouth for faded regency façades and donkey rides with candy floss, and Abbotsbury for the famous swannery and sub-tropical gardens.
  • Guests wanting to sample local restaurants should look to Mark Hixʼs ʻOyster & Fish Houseʼ in Lyme Regis‘ ‘Brassica’ in Beaminster, The Parlour in Little Bredy or the Hive Café in the beach below.
