Hotel of the Year

Chic interiors, beautiful rooms, lovely staff, wonderful food - all this in the Forest of Dean with great walking and cycling trails

A gorgeous small hotel, one of the best. It sits on the edge of the Forest of Dean, a magical world of woodland walks, medieval castles, meandering rivers and bleating sheep. You're in the middle of a tiny village with country views all around. Step inside to find sparkling interiors – Colin and Hari have spent a small fortune turning their realm into something very special indeed. An airy elegance mixes with golden stone walls and original timber frames, the house bearing testament to its Tudor roots. Big or small, bedrooms are divine – stylishly uncluttered with smart fabrics, robes in fine bathrooms and super-comfy beds. Those in the main house have ancient beamed ceilings, those in the old barns have original stone walls. The bigger rooms are faultless: the best beds, claw-foot baths, enormous showers, the lap of luxury. Lovely local food waits downstairs, perhaps cider-cured salmon, haunch of venison, rhubarb Bakewell tart; there are home-laid eggs for breakfast, too. You can kayak on the Wye, forage in the forest, take to cycle tracks. Don't miss Puzzlewood or Clearwell Caves.

  • SSSI Land - The hotel is located in 14 acres of ancient grassland which is protected as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) as it has an unusually range of wildflowers
  • St Peter's Church - This is considered by some as a 'jewel' in the historic village of Clearwell, it was designed by John Middleton and opened in 1866. There is also a great deal of fine sculpture.
  • Cathedral of the Forest - The Church of All Saints in Newland (2 miles from the hotel), traditionally and affectionately known as the 'Cathedral of the Forest', was begun in the early 1200s. King John appointed Robert of Wakering as first Rector in 1216.
  • Royal Forest of Dean & Wye Valley - We are located in the heart of this Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB). For adventure-seekers, we have cycling, mountain-biking, treetop zipwires, kayaking and much more.
  • Puzzle Wood - Right on our doorstep, Puzzlewood is a unique and enchanting 14 acre ancient woodland. JRR Tolkien is reputed to have taken his inspiration h from Puzzlewood, and it's easy to see why. Puzzlewood is used regularly as a filming location.
  • Foraging - The countryside surrounding the hotel is a foragers paradise with an amazing array of wild food to collect. We run regular foraging trips with local expert Raoul van Den Broucke.

"We spent two nights in this superb hotel and from the moment we arrived we found all the staff to be engaging, and nothing was too much trouble for anybody. The room was sumptuously appointed with elegant bedlinen and superb towels. The food was without doubt out of this world. The menus were imaginative and used very local produce. Breakfast was elegant and copious and the number of choices for each item was amazing. I ordered a full English which was freshly cooked and arrived within a few minutes. I want to go again as soon as I can. Great WiFi too which is amazing for the area."

"Stayed one night with my husband recently whilst on a visit from Ireland. It is a truly beautiful hotel, we were kindly upgraded to a superior room by the really lovely Lara when we arrived - the room was beautiful, nespresso machine, crisp egyptian cotton sheets, lovely bathroom with really good size shower and a claw foot bath with the most aromatic complimentary products to luxuriate in! Dinner in the restaurant was delicious and breakfast the next morning equally so. Would definitely recommend this Hotel, our only regret being that we could not stay longer :( "

"This is a gem of a place. We have stayed twice (including a large party of us at New Year) and both times have found the atmosphere to be warm, friendly, helpful and efficient. The food is excellent with fresh ingredients and wonderful breakfasts. Rooms are comfortable and well equipped. Can't fault it."
