This fine old house has the style of a small hotel and the intimacy of a boutique B&B – expect river views, stylish rooms and a warm welcome

Kevin and Kathryn left high-flying jobs to cook, clean, polish and shine; they couldn’t be happier. Their new home is this attractive 17th-century merchant’s house with the best view in town. Lawns run down to the river Wye, then views shoot up the other side to St Mary’s church. Inside, you find original elm floors and painted beamed ceilings, but the feel is contemporary, with cool colours, beautiful armchairs and antler chandeliers in the sitting room. Bedrooms have an easy elegance: comfy beds, crisp linen, pretty art, the odd timber frame. Five have the view, two have a claw-foot bath, others have power showers, a couple on high can be taken together. Breakfast is delicious, with doors in the sun room that fold back to drink in the view. Walk in the hills, kayak on the Wye, cycle in the Forest of Dean. Come home to an honesty bar in the sitting room and three terraces in the gorgeous garden, where colourful beds flourish. Wilton Castle, a 12th-century ruin, stands across the field; Hereford is close for the Mappa Mundi; good local restaurants wait. Dogs are welcome.

Kevin & Kathryn Whyte:

  • Ross on Wye is the gateway to the beautiful Lower Wye Valley which meanders majestically towards the sea. The Bridge House sits on a bend in the river with direct access to the river paths
  • Ten minutes drive from Ross on Wye is Symonds Yat where Peregrin Falcons nest on the high cliffs. This is also an ideal place to hire a canoe and paddle along the river in the peaceful unspoilt valley.
  • There are many castles along the river Wye within easy reach. Goodrich and Raglan Castle are certainly worth a visit as are some of the smaller more remote castles which protect the English/Welsh border.
  • The Forest of Dean is one of England's most ancient woodland areas and is a beautiful place to visit whether walking, cycling or pony trekking during all four seasons.
  • Ross on Wye and the surrounding villages provide a wealth of great eating establishments from gourmet food to genuine Nepalese cookery in the aptly named Yaks and Yetis Restaurant.
  • If caving is your thing, there are several locations to explore beneath the earth in safety and with experienced guides. These include Clearwell Caves and The Doward Caves and King Arthur's Cave.
