On the fringe of the Wye Valley AONB midway between Ross-on-Wye and Monmouth, this old coaching inn, now scrubbed fresh, stands proudly in a small hamlet. Come for the weekend, it's only 2.5 hours on the train from Paddington to Hereford, and spend your time eating well (the food has won awards), rambling around the countryside and sleeping deeply in cloud-comfy beds.
Meals are eaten in the cosy beamed dining room; a full English to set you up for the day or homemade granola and fruit salad if you fancy a lighter option. This is a popular spot for locals who come for the ales on tap and really good food. Enjoy a nightcap in front of a roaring fire before slipping upstairs to bed. Two bedrooms have neat shower rooms, the master a freestanding tub, all three are smart and spacious.
Find a sunny spot in the immaculately lawned garden, walk through woods and valleys, muck about on the river Wye, head over the border to the Brecon Beacons in rural Wales.

- You'll find yourself in an officially recognised Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and will be surrounded by breathtaking Herefordshire countryside, with a plethora of rural walks and rambles close by.
- Visit one of the best places in the country to view peregrine falcons. At Symonds Yat Rock you can also explore an ancient fort and learn of its history or enjoy a short river cruise along the Wye.
- You are well-situated between Hereford with its Gothic Cathedral and Cider Museum; Monmouth which is just over the border in Wales; and the market river town of Ross on Wye - officially acknowledged as the birthplace of tourism in England.
