A lovely old cottage in the cliffside village of St Lawrence. Watch boats sail by from the terrace, soak in an antique bath with sea views…

Read guest comments

Tucked into the Isle of Wight’s Undercliff, this charming Victorian cottage was once St Lawrence’s village inn. Today, local drinkers are long gone and this two-bedroom bolthole is now frequented by families and couples looking for a stylish island retreat. Lush vegetation, historic buildings and spectacular sea views surround you here. Step through the front door, framed by a rose-covered arch, into bright and cosy interiors. Tessa and Lev’s love for their delightful holiday cottage is obvious throughout – from the well-tended terrace to the claw-foot bath thoughtfully placed so you can gaze at the sea and sky while you soak. The homely sitting room is stocked with books, films and board games; a wood-burner sits within the exposed-brick fireplace – logs are on the house. An Aga (electric), Belfast sink and wooden table create a relaxed farmhouse feel in the kitchen, while there’s a barbecue for al fresco dining on sunny days. Upstairs, light-filled bedrooms have comfy mattresses and colourful prints on the walls. It’s a mile’s stroll to Ventnor Botanic Gardens or to beautiful, secluded Steephill Cove.

  • The Isle of Wight coastal path goes past our front door – perfect for walkers and bird watchers. It's a lovely 45-minute stroll along the cliffs to Ventnor.
  • More than half of the Isle of Wight is designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, including the area around Mole End.
  • The Ventnor Fringe, held every summer since 2010, attracts over 300 performers every year, and is now established as one of the island's main attractions.
  • The nearby Botanical Gardens benefit from the Undercliff area's famously benevolent climate to grow many plants considered too delicate for mainland Britain.
  • The older of St. Lawrence's two churches, originally just thirty feet long, used to be the smallest parish church in England.
  • In Victorian times the view from the trains that emerged from the St. Lawrence tunnel was said to be "the best and most dramatic in Europe".

"Spacious, clean & well-appointed cottage in a peaceful, idyllic setting but nonetheless just a short drive to many interesting places. An ideal base from which to tour the Island. Fresh eggs, milk, butter, bread and a nice bottle of wine were a thoughtful touch as were the very clear directions and guide to appliances etc. Very comfortable bed in the master bedroom (there were only the two of us) which is also blessed with a wonderful view of the English Channel (take a good pair of binoculars, you'll be glad you did!). Mole End would be our first choice for a return trip without question. "

"We had a wonderful week at Mole End! The cottage is wonderfully well equipped and feels like a home from home! It is tastefully decorated with a fantastic selection of books to read. The chilled rose wine and food essentials on arrival was a lovely touch and much appreciated. The beautiful free-standing bath with sea-views was a real treat. Mole End is in a wonderful location and we loved our evening walks to the beach. We couldn't recommend it more highly! Thank you so much for a great holiday! "

"We had a fantastic time at Mole End. The location is second to none - sitting on the terrace in the evening sun, looking out over the sea, was the perfect way to relax in the evening after a busy day out. The holiday house has everything you could need and more. We were very comfortable there with our baby. Plenty of local reference books and ideas for walks from the front door, which we really appreciated!"

"The joy of arriving at Mole End and finding out that it was everything and more that I had imagined, was a lovely feeling. Mole End is a wonderful place to stay. The cottage is beautifully decorated with a stylish charm that made us feel at home the minute we walked through the door. Mole End has all the usual conveniences including a bookshelf stuffed with holiday reading, comfy beds, wifi, easy tv remote, with the pièce de résistance being the glorious view of the sea from the main bedroom and bathroom. Suffice to say, Mole End ticked all the boxes and we'd love to visit again."

"Lovely property in a beautiful setting and generally well appointed. A couple of bug bears - no knob for the grill on the cooker and no plug in the bathroom basin. A sign near the loo explaining the sensitivity of the flushing system would be helpful and save 24 hours without said flushing system! For future visitors, now the Christian Centre is no longer there, would suggest ' pass church on left and after approx 600 yards turn left onto drive immediately before the crossroads sign' . Overall we loved the property and would visit again."
