A welcoming country-house hotel that’s popular with locals and visitors alike - good food, stylish rooms and an airy restaurant wait

In its day Lincoln was one of the most important cities in England. Its castle holds one of the four original copies of the Magna Carta and was built by William the Conqueror in 1068; its cathedral dates to 1090 and remains one of the finest in Europe. All of which makes it a great city to visit, and if you want to beat a peaceful retreat into the country at the end of the day, this is the place to stay. It sits two miles east of Lincoln in a small village on the river Witham – footpaths by the water lead back into town. As for this Georgian rectory, you'll find smart lawns to the front, then a big welcome within – Edward and Lucy go out of their way to make your stay special. There's a wood-burner in the hall, a breakfast room with garden views, a sitting-room bar for afternoon tea, then a light-filled orangery restaurant. Stylish bedrooms offer unstinting comforts. Rooms at the front are bigger and have the view, all have good beds, bold wallpapers, excellent bathrooms, a sofa if there's room. As for the food, there's posh fish and chips in the bar or sea bass with spring greens in the orangery.

  • We strongly recommend a tour of Lincoln Cathedral and a visit to Steep Hill – once voted ‘Britain’s Best Street’, it’s home to some of Lincoln’s finest boutiques. If strolling fails to take your fancy, why not explore Lincoln from a leisurely open top bus.
  • Personally, we love nothing more than a mooch around Hemswell Antiques Centre. Home to Europe’s largest selection of antique dealers, it’s a sight to behold!
  • For a hint of adventure, head to the Lincolnshire Wolds! The rolling hills, unique chalk streams and challenging footpaths are enough to set anybody’s inner rambler free.
  • For the more daring, the Bailgate is home to the Lincolnshire Ghost Walk. Running every Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday at 7pm, the walk captures your imagination unveiling many fascinating tails about what lies beneath.
  • History, art and culture buffs will love exploring The Collection Museum and Usher art gallery.
  • Close to Lincoln University and the Brayford area.

Guest feedback
"As I was travelling alone this time around I was rather excited to see how the 'single room solution' would look at a place like Washingborough Hall... and I must say, even though it was upstairs and small, my room was ever so practical. I even had a bath tub - which I love - and all the amenities of a fullsize double room! I felt very cozy and slept like a log. All in all, charming place and staff, reasonably priced, lovely food - I would return anytime and would recommend "Washy Hall" to all my friends when planing to go to Lincolnshire! "
