Bring walking gear and explore little-changed countryside and the wild north Norfolk coast: seemingly endless empty beaches blending with the sky. Coastal villages, some now chic, like Holkham and Stiffkey, have good pub food and bistros; No 1 Cromer’s fish and chips are renowned.
Come with the children, they’ll love the sloping ceilings, the low windows and the jaunty twin bedroom up its own (gated) flight of stairs. Come with your bike on the train to nearby Gunton and pedal to stately homes like Blickling and Felbrigg Hall.
However you fill your days the cottage has a friendly, relaxed atmosphere; pick a book from the shelf, settle by the wood-burning stove, perhaps with a well-run dog at your feet.
