An old farm worker's cottage, niftily done up and nicely remote, with walking and fishing on the doorstep, four miles from Hadrian's Wall

If you haven't been to Northumberland before then you'll be thrilled to enter a world of rolling hills chopped up by dry stone walls, lonely Roman roads (not much has changed here since they shouldered through), acres of pine forests, and a pleasing dearth of other human beings. Come to walk along bridle paths, footpaths and well-worn sheep paths across to Vindolanda, the Roman fort and the Wall.

Inside is generous, light and roomy with a humongous kitchen, French doors to the garden, smart TV, a mix of old prints of the county and plenty of castles, plus a big OS map on the wall. Views from all windows are far-reaching and will tempt you outside again and again. Wander down to fish in the river South Tyne (permits available) or hire bikes and head for the hills.

You can walk off-road to the nearest town, Hexham, three miles, which has good independent shops, a train station and a rather fine Abbey.

Local points of interest from Emma & James Middleton:

Puntos de interés sobre la región de
Emma & James Middleton:

  • Just up the road from Stay On The Hill is the highly acclaimed, Michelin star restaurant, HJEM. Fine dining Scandinavian cuisine using the best Northumbrian produce in a tasting menu format. An absolute must, but table reservations necessary.
  • Explore the picturesque village of Corbridge, perusing the many independent shops (RE - is a favourite homeware store). Once you have filled your car and had a walk along the river, relax with a cuppa at Tea & Tipple or grab a bite of lunch at The Angel.
  • Book a ticket for Tynedale Beer Festival and witness first-hand the warm and friendly Geordie hospitality whilst sampling one of the 100's of beers, ales, ciders and more. If running is your thing, The Great North Run is a must, the atmosphere is electric.
  • History and culture, walking or cycling, Hadrian’s Wall has everything to offer. Take a picnic, enjoy the panoramic views or pop to the Twice Brewed Inn for lunch, you can even visit their on-site Brew House. The Sill visitor centre is right next door.
  • Cyclists will love Kielder water and forest, a haven for wildlife (red squirrels, deer and otters). The Lakeside way is a 27-mile trail, everyone from littleies on balance bikes, mountain bikers and wheelchair users will enjoy this spectacular scenery.
  • A trip to Northumberland is not complete without heading to the coast. Explore the unspoilt beaches, castles, coastal paths and delicious local cuisine. One of our favourites is a walk at Newton-by-the-Sea and a crab sandwich at the Ship Inn
