Chelmarsh Hall - Self-catering house in Shropshire
Bridgnorth, WV16 6AZ, Shropshire
England,
Reino Unido
This special country house mixes old and new with aplomb, in an unfussy, artful way. You have two sitting rooms, both with plenty of light from the large gothic windows, books and games, TVs (one in the kitchen too!) and a SONOS sound system.
The whole gang can hang out in the kitchen with masses of worktops, cookbooks, a generous table and a sofa for chatting. Everything the cooks need is here, along with a welcome hamper with artisan bread, butter and jam, stuff for your first breakfast and a bottle of wine from Tanners in Shrewsbury. The house is surrounded by gardens, with a west facing, walled courtyard where you can sizzle supper on the barbecue or warm yourselves round the chimenea. Swing seats face east for a morning cup of tea and you can sometimes spot the steam train puffing along the valley.
Walk straight onto the Jack Mytton Way - this is well-tended countryside and you'll come across numerous interesting villages.

Local points of interest from James Arthur:
Puntos de interés sobre la región de
James Arthur:
- There is something for everyone in Shropshire and first time visitors are always amazed by the sheer beauty of the rolling Shropshire countryside. Chelmarsh Hall overlooks the Severn Valley with a plethora of beautiful walks and plenty of excellent pubs!
- Our go-to day trip with friends includes a drive to Ludlow to potter in the antiques shops and explore the market stalls before visiting the impressive castle. Then home via Much Wenlock (home of the modern Olympics and Wenlock Priory) or The Long Mynd.
- For adventurers the Jack Mytton Way (traversing 100 miles of Shropshire countryside) is next to the house and a National Cycle Route. You could hack out of the local riding school, canoe the Severn, sail, paddleboard or wild swim in Chelmarsh Reservoir.
- The area is a dog-walkers paradise with the meandering River Severn is a short walk from the house. Nature lovers could pop down the hill and watch waders and lapwing at the nature reserve. Children can roam and play safely in the large gardens.
- Immediate local attractions include the Severn Valley Railway (a local steam railway) which you can hear tooting in the distance from the garden. We'd also recommend the local market towns of Bridgnorth and Ludlow (particularly on Saturday market days).
- For family day trips we'd recommend Ironbridge Gorge and the Victorian Museums (the start of the Industrial Revolution and a UNESCO World Heritage Site), Wroxeter Roman City, Wenlock Priory, Buildwas Abbey, the RAF Museum at Cosford, or a stately home...
