Lovely small hotel in quirky market town surrounded by miles of stunning country - pretty rooms, tasty food and fine ales wait

Read guest comments

This thriving medieval market town sits amid some of the loveliest country in the land, a launch pad for walkers and cyclists alike, with Offa's Dyke, Long Mynd and the Kerry Ridgeway all close. After a day in the hills, roll back to this quirky hotel for a night of gentle carousing. You'll find heaps of country comforts: hearty food, impeccable ales, super rooms with honest prices. Downstairs, there's a coal fire in the pretty snug, oak panelling in the breakfast room, and Millie the short-haired dachshund who patrols the corridors with aplomb. Stylish bedrooms upstairs have all be refurbished. Expect good beds, warm colours, flat-screen TVs, an armchair if there's room. Some are up in the eaves, several have views of the Shropshire hills, two have baths in the room. Back downstairs you find the sort of food you'd want after a day in the hills, perhaps hot garlic prawns, beef and ale pie, sticky toffee pudding. Don't miss the hugely popular real ale festival in July, the beer drinker's equivalent of Glastonbury. The garden terrace, with long country views, is a fine spot for a sundowner.

  • The Castle Hotel is built with stone from, and on the site of, the original castle in Bishops Castle. Some excellent castles within a few miles drive are Clun Castle, Powis Castle, Stokesay Castle, Montgomery Castle and Ludlow Castle.
  • Lying within a giant loop of the River Severn and guarded by its castle, Shrewsbury has been called England's finest Tudor town. Black & white buildings abound with their ancient connecting 'shuts' or passageways. There are over 660 listed buildings here!
  • Within easy reach of Bishops Castle, the ancient Market town of Ludlow and its castle sit on the steep banks of the River Teme. It is one of Britain's best-preserved medieval towns. The Bull Ring was once the site of bull baiting in the Middle Ages.
  • Often described as one of Britain's most unspoilt towns, Montgomery is well worth a visit, with its mix of timber framed buildings and grand Georgian and Victorian houses. Montgomery grew up around the hill-top castle in the early 13th century.
  • For walking, try the famous walks of the Shropshire Way, the Long Mynd and Offa's Dyke, to the hundreds of miles of public footpaths across the county. The South Shropshire Way runs right past the front steps of the hotel.
  • For anyone looking for a more leisurely stroll take an amble up Carding Mill Valley in nearby Church Stretton. Owned by the National Trust you will be rewarded with glorious and panoramic views.

"The Castle fully lived up to expectations and proved to be the perfect base for exploring the beautiful Shropshire hills. The staff were all very welcoming of us and our cocker spaniel Bonny and it was easy for us to take our meals in the bar where (well-behaved) dogs are allowed. On our last day owner Henry made a great recommendation for a walk nearby where we could let Bonny off the lead. We shall return, I'm sure."

"Spent two delightful nights here. Faultless service, very welcoming bar and dining-room, and an extremely comfortable and quiet room. Will definitely return."
