Cool inns with lovely rooms in interesting parts of the land are a big hit with lots of us – we like the easy style, the local food, the good prices and the happy staff. The White Hart is a case in point, a beautifully refurbished inn. It sits on Somerton's ancient market square, 16th-century bricks and mortar, 21st-century lipstick and pearls. Inside, old and new mix beautifully: stone walls and parquet flooring, lovely sofas in front of the fire, funky lamps hanging above the bar. You'll find soft colours, padded window seats, country rugs, antler chandeliers. There's a cute booth in a stone turret, then lovely food waits, perhaps a chargrilled steak, Cornish crab cakes or wood-roasted pork loin. In summer, you spill onto a smart courtyard or into the garden for views of open country. Upstairs, fabulous bedrooms await. You might find timber frames, a claw-foot bath, a wall of paper or stripped boards. All have super beds, flat-screen TVs, lovely bathrooms and a nice price. Beautiful Somerset is all around, don't miss it.

- The White Hart is in Market Square, an old market place with a lovely Buttercross which is floodlit at night. You will also find the old Town Hall, alms houses, the old courthouse which is now The Somerset Guild of Craftsmen, Courthouse Gallery.
- Glastonbury (often associated with the famous music festival, which is actually held a few miles down the road in Pilton) is well worth a visit. It is dominated by The Tor (a National Trust monument) which affords wonderful views across the county.
- Somerset is home to many National Trust houses and gardens. A few of these include: Montacute house, Lytes Cary, Stourhead and King Alfred's tower, Barrington Court, TIntinhull Gardens
- Nearby Wells is the smallest cathedral city in England. You can hear evensong in the cathedral daily. Other places of interest in Wells include The Bishop’s Palace, the Museum and the historic market place.
- If it's shopping you're after, there's the quarterly antiques markets held at the Bath and West Showground near Shepton Mallet. Or visit The Mulberry Factory Shop, Shepton Mallet and also Kilver Court Clarks Village- a retail shopping village.
- And for children there's Greenbank's heated outdoor pool in Street or Mendip Outdoor pursuits.
