A lovely coaching inn with a 500-year-old history, now a very swish but understated place to eat and stay with an important art collection

A small bar area with adjoining lounge is a good spot for a pre-lunch or dinner drink - the wine list is impressive, with varieties from all over the world and some hidden gems. Exposed brick walls, wooden floors and tables, beams and fireplaces are reassuringly traditional but the feel is relaxed and informal. The Well Room restaurant is magnificent with a high vaulted ceiling and much art to gaze at - from old masters to Graham Sutherland. You eat well: talented head chef Reuben Aguilar Bel produces modern British dishes with a Spanish accent, service is impeccable.

Retire to beautiful bedrooms, some in the main building, others in an equally attractive conversion through the garden. All have warm heritage colours, rich fabrics, Smart TVs, underfloor heating and some stunning original art; bathrooms are attractive.

On warm days you can sit in the newly-designed garden, well away from the road, or head off on glorious walks.

Conor Fletcher:

  • Abberton Reservoir Nature Reserve is one of Europe’s best wetland sites and is just half an hour North of Stoke by Nayland. It’s a lovely day-trip for couples or families.
  • Bourne Mill was originally built for banquets by the Elizabethans and was then converted into a mill in the 19th century. Set in peaceful surrounds and just a 20 minute drive from Stoke By Nayland Resort, this National Trust site is next to a millpond and a bubbling stream.
  • High Woods Country Park is a beautiful location for nature-lovers. Woodland, lake, marshland and wildflower meadows, the Country Park is home to intriguing nature walks, and a popular location for hikers and cyclists, too.
  • If you’re popping into Colchester yet craving a bout of sunny nature, this lush and expansive park and gardens is a bit of a town centre oasis. Often the park is host to events, music concerts and festivals, it’s also a lovely retreat for couples or families.
