A chic bolthole in a sleepy Suffolk village with seriously good food, stylish bedrooms, riverside walks and Suffolk’s wild coast

A great place to wash up for a few lazy days. Orford is hard to beat, a sleepy Suffolk village blissfully marooned at the end of the road. River, beach and forest await, as does the Crown & Castle, a welcoming English hostelry where the art of hospitality is practised with unstinting flair. The inn stands in the shadow of Orford's 12th-century castle. Uncluttered interiors have a warm, airy feel with stripped floorboards, open fires, wonderful art and flickering candles at night. Chic bedrooms have Vi-Spring beds, fancy bathrooms, lovely fabrics, the odd armchair. Four in the main house have watery views, the suite is huge, the garden rooms big and light, the courtyard rooms a real delight. All have crisp white linen, TVs, DVDs and digital radios. Wellington boots wait at the back door, so pull on a pair and explore Rendlesham Forest or hop on a boat and chug over to Orfordness. Ambrosial food awaits your return, perhaps potted brown shrimps, a faultless steak and ale pie, crushed pistachio meringue with a chocolate ice-cream sundae. Sutton Hoo is close. Dogs are very welcome.

John Morrell:

  • Orford Castle, English Heritage. Built as a coastal defence in the C12th by Henry 2nd, this is a near-perfect example of a Norman keep, with panoramic views over the Alde estuary.
  • RSPB Minsmere. The reserve is situated on the coast, north of Orford. There are nature trails, bird watching, a wealth of wildlife and a brand new visitor centre.
  • Orford Ness, National Trust. The Ness is an extraordinary, 12-mile long shingle spit that was used for much of the twentieth century by the MOD to test weapons, including the stability of nuclear bombs.
  • The Red House, Aldeburgh. Lived in by composer, Benjamin Britten, and his partner, the tenor Peter Pears, visitors may explore the interesting exhibition space, visit the library and studio, and walk around the garden.
  • Framlingham Castle, English Heritage. Built in the C12th by the Bigod family (Earls of Norfolk), it is one of the finest examples of a curtain walled castle-and you can walk around the ramparts.
  • Boyton and Hollesley Marshes. A marvelous trail where you may well see anything from avocets to glossy ibis, spoonbill and black-winged stilts.

"My wife and I have stayed several times at the Crown and Castle and always look forward to our next visit. Orford is a beautiful unspoilt place and the Crown and Castle is situated at the heart of it. We always find the rooms extremely well presented and the owners and staff friendly and welcoming although always maintaining a professional attitude. The food is always fresh and well presented and with a superb wine list to compliment it. What with the superb bakers over the road it's hard to come away without having gained a pound or two, or kilogram if you are pro European. Highly recommended"

"If you're looking for a relaxing retreat with excellent rooms, great food and wonderfully attentive staff then the Crown and Castle is a must visit destination. Even our dog was made to feel like an important guest, she's still talking about the goodies bag that was awaiting her on our arrival."
