The Wentworth has the loveliest position in town, the beach literally a pebble's throw from the garden, the sea rolling east under a vast sky. Inside, fires smoulder, clocks chime and seaside elegance abounds. It's all terrifically English, with vintage wallpapers, kind local staff and an elegant bar that opens onto a terrace garden. The restaurant looks out to sea, spilling onto a sunken terrace in summer for views of passing boats. Proper English fare is the order of the day: stilton soup, breast of guinea fowl, lemon posset with raspberries and shortbread. The hotel has been in the same family since 1920 and old-fashioned values mix harmoniously with interiors that are refreshed often to keep things sparkling. Airy bedrooms are deeply comfy, those at the front have sea views (and binoculars). Expect warm colours, smart fabrics, padded headboards and good beds; all have stylish bathrooms, too. You’ll find sofas galore in the sitting rooms, but you may want to spurn them to walk by the sea. Joyce Grenfell was a regular. The Snape Maltings are close.

- We are now in our 95th year of same family ownership.G.C Pritt,my grandfather, had heart problems and was told by his doctor to go to the country and run a hotel. Unusual advice!
- I n 1953, the year of the East coast flood, the sea flooded the wine cellar and all the labels where washed away. My Father, unable to distinguish one wine from another, sold every bottle for the same price. you were either lucky or not!
- Aldeburgh has and excellent high street with m any independent shops. there are 0ver 20 clothing shops alone with many favourite brands, Crew, White Stuff, Joules, Fat Face & O & C Butchers a tradition outfitters with a 21st Century outlook
- Things you can do. Play golf on one of the finest links courses in the country. Birdwatch at RSPB Minsmere, where Bitterns and Marsh Harriers thrive. Walk along miles of deserted beaches to the next coastal villages of Thorpeness, Sizewell and Dunwich
- Enjoy a pint of Adnams bitter from the award winning Southwold brewery. Buy fresh fish from the beach to take home with you. Watch the world go by from either of our two sea facing terrace gardens whilst enjoying an alfresco lunch or delicious cream tea
- I n the Autumn and Winter snooze in front of our three open fires, or take a brisk walk straight out of the hotel and along the beach or down to the river Alde.
