A charming cottage a short stroll to West Wittering beach for families who love the outdoors: close to salt marshes and rolling countryside

Read guest comments

Step through a white gate, down the garden path and into the porch of your cottage; one in a neat row of whitewashed 19th-century dwellings. Downstairs there's a fresh nautical feel: the cosy living room, dining area and well-stocked kitchen are all open plan. The spick and span family bathroom is down here too. Upstairs to three bedrooms: a double with sea views and two twins.

Take your coffee outside to the terrace while you plan your day - perhaps a yomp through miles of rolling Sussex landscape, a jaunt to boaty Chichester or a wander down to wonderful West Wittering beach, a ten-minute walk, for some twitching: swifts and swallows in spring, oyster catchers and geese in autumn.

You're left a generous pile of logs for the open fire, a TV and plenty of books and board games. There's a shed in the garden bursting with outdoorsy things: bikes, body boards, buckets, spades and crabbing nets; and an outdoor shower for sandy toes.

  • The house is a two-story Grade II listed terrace dating from 1834. The terrace and garden to the front of the house is a west facing sun trap and is furnished with a wooden table & chairs to take advantage of this for lovely leisurely meals in the garden.
  • The Landing café has the best coffee, lovely sandwiches and cakes and is a five minute walk from the cottage. Their summer hours are M-F: 8-6pm and Sat & Sun: 9-6
  • Local Activities: Watersports Riding Sailing Birdwatching Horseriding: Cakeham Stables Rambling Fishbourne Roman Palace Golf at Goodwood Racing at Goodwood Pallant House Gallery in Chichester Chichester Cathedral Chichester Multiplex cinema
  • East Head Sand Dunes: The cottage is on the last road before West Wittering Beach. West Wittering beach and the East Head sand dunes are managed by the National Trust. East Head is a 10 minute walk from the cottage along the newly rebuilt Harbour Wall Walk
  • Old House at Home 01243 511234 From The Landing you can see The Old House at Home to the right, across the street on Cakeham Road. This popular pub & restaurant gets filled up quickly so we recommend that you book a table if you wish to eat there.
  • Tessiers Butchers: Last, but not least, is Tessiers, a great & friendly butcher. As well as all the meats, including home-made sausages and a BBQ range, deli foods, butter, jams, biscuits.

"The cottage was beautifully presented and had all we needed for a comfortable stay. The location is absolutely fabulous. Such a treat to walk out of the gate and immediately experience such a beautiful natural environment. The coastal walks in all directions were stunning. Other than walking and throwing stones in to the sea, crabbing, bike trips into East Wittering and a few cafe/pubs stops were topped off by games around the table in the evening. Perfect. "

"This is a great cottage - very atmospheric and charming but also with 3 good bedrooms and a very nice open plan living space downstairs. It's around ten minutes walk, either down a footpath or along roads to West Wittering beach which is a lovely sandy beach that has Blue Flag status. Its also well-placed for walks around the spits and National Trust land that is next to the beach. We had a great time with the kids loving the beach in particular. East Wittering, which has more shops, is either a longer walk or drive away. The cottage is very tastefully done out with all the bits and bobs you'd expect. Whilst there's no back garden there's a very pleasant front garden with a table for having meals from or using as an activity table for the kids. Various beach accessories are thoughtfully provided and we made good use of the body boards, spades and buckets. Added bonus (for me at least) was the selection of cricket books sprinkled though the bookshelves. Who can argue with reading Cardus before watching the Perseid meteor shower with the kids tucked up in bed (unless of course you don't like early twentieth century cricket writers that is)?"

"Wish we could have stayed all summer...The cottage is perfectly positioned in the prettier, quiet part of West Wittering. The village centre is a quick bike ride/10 minute walk away where we found Tessier's (great butcher with lots of added extras such as pasta/curry sauces, farm eggs, milk, bread, scones etc). The crabbing pool is moments away, which was a real hit with our daughters (ages 8 and 10) and the paths leading to the beach or towards Itchenor (and the two tyre swings!) are literally at the end of the lane. The cottage itself is well equipped and presented to a good standard with a charming, lavender filled garden. The two adult bikes were a real bonus too. We would have loved to stay for longer and will definitely be back. "

"We spent a magical week in this cottage helped by brilliant weather. It is a gem. Perfectly located for the beach, East Head and West Wittering Creek. The cottage is gorgeous, full of charm, beautifully decorated and equipped and masses of room for two adults and four children. It's an easy walk or bike to the local shops and the children loved the freedom of roaming around on their bikes. My son biked into Itchenor to sail with his friends and my daughter put her pony into the West Wittering riding school and galloped on the beach. Lovely sunny garden equipped with barbecue, bikes and everything you could need. We have already re-booked for 2017."

"My family and I had a wonderful stay in the cottage this Easter. The location can’t be bettered and the cottage was perfect, cosy with everything we could have wanted. After a day on the beach it was brilliant to walk back to a welcoming cottage with an open fire. Looking forward to our next stay."
