Chic beach pad with excellent food, a New England feel and stylish bedrooms - Camber Sands is across the road, gorgeous Rye is close

Read guest comments

This cool little hotel stands across the road from Camber Sands, where five miles of pristine beach are home to kite surfers, beach cricketers and sun worshipers alike. As for the Gallivant, a refurbishment brought a stunning new look to every corner. Bedrooms, small and large, and now things of great beauty. Snug cabin rooms are clad in wood with brass lamps hanging from the ceiling; baby Hamptons have daybeds and marble bathrooms; deck rooms at the back come in cool whites with doors onto private terraces. Then come the garden rooms - heaven for hedonists - with double-ended baths in the room (and doors that slide for privacy), then small decks in the garden, where you’ll also find a massage hut and deckchairs in summer. All have great storage, flawless bathrooms and crisp linen for Hypnos beds. As for the food, most is sourced within 10 miles and you eat in an airy restaurant that opens onto a terrace in summer, perhaps cod with lime and cucumber, salt marsh lamb with root veg, chocolate torte with Frangelico jelly. There’s tea and cake ‘on the house’ every afternoon, too.

  • Camber Sands - You're a three minute stroll from 5 miles of award-winning pristine coastline sitting behind one of the few protected dune systems in the UK. - summer and winter, the huge sandy beach is an ideal spot for a picnic or walking the dog
  • Dungeness - An extraordinary shingle wilderness that sits on the most southerly point of the south east coast. Scattered with ramshackle cottages and boats it feels left behind by the modern world. Famous for its population of artists and writers
  • Rye - One of the ancient Cinque Ports, Rye is remarkably untouched with its cobbled streets, lined with Medieval and Georgian architecture and eclectic mix of independent traders, chic boutiques, antique shops and art galleries
  • Great Dixter House and Gardens - Once the family home to the great gardening writer Christopher Lloyd this historic house, gardens and centre of education is now a place of pilgrimage for horticulturists from across the world
  • Battle of Hastings, Abbey and battlefield - The site of probably the most famous and decisive battle in English history, 1066 Battle of Hastings where William the Duke of Normandy defeated King Harold of England marking the end of Anglo-Saxon England
  • Port Lympne Wildlife Park - Set in 600 acres and housing over 650 rare and endangered animals, Port Lympne is famous of its Gorillas and has one of the largest captive collections in the world. The perfect place to spend the day with the whole family.

"Great location stones through from the beach. We also took a long walk into Rye. The room was lovely and had everything we needed. We enjoyed the addition of the 'Larder of Guilty Pleasures' an honesty bar. We had a delicious evening meal in the restaurant - all the food is locally sourced. Breakfast was hearty and again very tasty. It was a perfect night away and we made the most of the DVD library. The staff were very attentive, knowledgeable and friendly. We'd love to go back."
