A huge treat to stay in this fabulous Grade I listed Jacobean manor house surrounded by gardens - a Sawday's Community Champion

Built around 1610 by John Hall, the house has a rare three-gabled south front and a plethora of gleaming windows. You stay in one of three vast, stately bedrooms: Eric on the ground floor, Kingston on the second and Moulton on the third. Each have fine views through resplendent windows, antique furniture and well-dressed beds, private bathrooms with embroidered gowns and a plush feel. A continental breakfast basket and fully stocked mini fridge await and each have a dining table for two.

Bedrooms are named after those who were connected in some way with the house as a slice of living history. If you want to learn more you can join a tour, indulge in a summer picnic or watch some live theatre – check the website for details of events.

There are delightful grounds to explore with a dovecote, Dutch lawn, archery lawn and three temples. Ancient trees provide shade, birds twitter and you can stroll to the millstream and river.

Christine Olivieri:

  • The Hall is only a 1-minute walk to vibrant independent local shops found in the town centre and is surrounded by stunning country walks set within beautiful idyllic fields and woodlands.
  • The river Avon flows peacefully beneath the historic 13th-century medieval stone bridge and as visitors walk along the paved pebbled streets they will be met with a collection of historic buildings, shops, pubs and restaurants.
  • Discover old weavers’ cottages stretched along hilltop views, and explore the Grade I-listed medieval Tithe Barn that dates to the early 14th century. On your travels, you may also come across one of the few surviving Anglo-Saxon churches in England.
  • Keep a look out for the Bridge Tea Rooms, a quaint traditional tea room that offers the very best in traditional, quintessentially English afternoon teas.
