In the ancient Yorkshire village of Coxwold, a delightful little cottage with a cosy wood-burner, a peaceful garden and a pub nearby

Read guest comments

A 19th-century cottage for two in a postcard-perfect Yorkshire village. Home to Shandy Hall, once inhabited by Laurence Sterne, Coxwold has an impressive literary pedigree. A medieval church perches on top of the hill and stone-built cottages run down to tearooms at the bottom. Halfway along is single-storey Braecote, just a short stroll from the cosy Fauconberg Arms pub. Park at the back of the cottage, then step through the door into a sunny kitchen diner. Delightful owner Sarah has done a top-notch renovation job on this old estate worker’s cottage, transforming it into a peaceful country bolthole. Inside, it’s quite a tardis, with a charming blend of contemporary and vintage style. Curl up in front of the wood-burner in the snug sitting room; prepare a romantic supper in the neat modern kitchen. Delicious welcome goodies include scones or locally made biscuits. Sleep in a king-size bed in a calm room overlooking the Hambleton Hills. On sunny days, enjoy breakfast in the pretty garden. Walkers are well placed for the Moors and Dales, history lovers can stroll to Newburgh Priory and Byland Abbey.

  • Coxwold is one of the prettiest villages in North Yorkshire, and right on the edge of The North York Moors National Park. It’s just over an hour’s drive to Whitby and Scarborough and the quaint villages of Robin Hoods Bay, Runswick Bay and Staithes.
  • The Michelin starred Black Swan and the Abbey Inn are close by. Chef Tommy Banks and his team grow and forage a wonderful range of ingredients to produce unique seasonal menus. If you don't have a reservation you can order a food box ahead of your stay.
  • Spend time exploring the medieval city of York, the spa town of Harrogate, Ripon with its stunning cathedral and picturesque Knaresborough overlooking the river. The market towns of Helmsley and Malton (our northern foodie capital) are a short drive away.
  • Great walks and stunning scenery; climb to the top of the White Horse at Kilburn & soak up the views over the vale of York. Cyclist will love the winding roads or head off to explore the moors cycle trails. More adventure? Book a flight in a glider.
  • The area is steeped in history: Newburgh Prior, Byland Abbey and Shandy Hall are on your doorstep, Castle Howard, Duncombe Park, Helmsley Castle and Rievaulx Abbey and Fountains Abbey are a short drive away.
  • We're close to the market towns Easingwold with its Georgian architecture, cobbled square, independent shops and pubs and Thirsk, once home to Yorkshire's most famous author and vet James Herriot.

"Braecote is a perfect cottage to unwind in - simple yet stylish, comfortable, very well equipped with enormous care and attention to detail put into it by the owners. A lovely sunny garden for al fresco dining and a cosy woodburner for relaxing evenings. Interesting artwork, maps, guide books, good novels and a great kitchen to cook and eat in. There are lovely walks from the door, lots of interesting places to visit nearby and no shortage of excellent cafes and restaurants in the area. A perfectly beautiful cottage and location and a perfect holiday. We look forward to going back there."

"We couldn't fault this cottage. Very comfortable and it was clear that a lot of thought had gone into making it an easy place to while away a few days in peace. Decor spotless and facilities excellent. I have already recommended the cottage and Sawday's (who we hadn't used before) to friends."

"Having just spent 5 nights at his delightful cottage I would not hesitate to reccomend it. The owners have thought of everything and the cottage is beautifully equipped. From top quality bedding and towels through to even leaving the wood burner prepared and ready to light, this cottage is charming, cosy and comfortable. All the fixtures and fittings are good quality and the place was immaculate and very warm. I can't wait to go back!"

"We have just come back from a 3 night stay in this wonderful little cottage. The owners, Sarah and Ian Harper, have clearly spent a lot of time decorating this cottage to make it homely and the little touches that they have added made our stay all the more enjoyable. I would highly recommend this cottage as a place to stay."

"What a wonderful cosy cottage Braecote is!! We loved staying at Black Bull Barn a couple of years ago, also owned by Sarah & Ian, and Braecote certainly didn't disappoint. Beautifully decorated and spotlessly clean, we were made to feel right at home the minute we arrived. There was nothing else we could have wished for. Braecote is a great base to travel from, with some lovely villages close by and great places to eat out ( we loved the Carlton Inn, Carlton Husthwaite) We even managed a day out at York races! Sarah & Ian have outstanding properties that anyone would be lucky to bide in!"

"My wife and I have just returned from the most wonderful weeks holiday at "Braecote cottage" in Coxwold N. Yorkshire owned by the most obliging & accommodating couple of Sarah & Ian Harper. Firstly let me tell you about the spotlessly clean Cottage, it is truly a home away from home, decorated with very comfortable high end furnishings and fitted out with every conceivable appliance you will need for a self catering stay. In the village there is a great Pub, lovely Tea rooms manicured gardens and some of the nicest people in the UK, add this all together and you have one beautiful destination"
