Part of the original Wensleydale creamery overlooking the river, with bustling Hawes and great walking country right on your doorstep

Read guest comments

Follow the babbling Mill Race to a quiet corner of Hawes to find this beautifully converted piece of Wensleydale history. The old Mill Fosse Cottage, with its blend of quirky touches, thick stone walls, flagged floors and exposed beams, is a snug, stylish retreat.

Within a couple of minutes, you’re in the heart of Hawes. Visit the Wensleydale Creamery and Museum, browse the antique shops or have a lazy lunch by the river. The Dales are ready to be explored, or you can take the short walk to Hardraw Falls and the pub next door.

Two people can spread out a bit here. Cook in the sociable kitchen (there are stools for chatterers), eat in the dining hall then relax in the upstairs sitting room in front of the wood-burner.

Sue & Ian Burrows:

  • The Wensleydale Creamery is one of the top tourist destinations in the Dales. Just a short walk from the cottage you can watch the famous cheese being made, buy scrummy cheese to take home. If you love cheese this is the place for you.
  • The Dales Countryside Museum tells the story of the Yorkshire Dales and the local people who have shaped the landscape for thousands of years. There are galleries, special exhibitions, a funky cafe and gift shop filled with items made by local artists.
  • For culture vultures try Fountains, Bolton or Jervaulx abbeys or castles Skipton, Bolton and Middleham. There's also Newby Hall, Mount Grace Priory or Constable Burton Hall and not forgetting the Georgian theatre royal in Richmond.
  • From your doorstep there are fabulous walks taking in spectacular waterfalls, wonderful scenery, ancient woodlands, drystone walls, flower-rich hay meadows in the spring and not forgetting the sheep, there's a lot of them.
  • The impressive Hardraw Falls are located in a lovely woodland setting beside a river, worth a visit especially if has been raining as they positively thunder with energy. Kevin Costner took a dip in them in Robin Hood Prince of Thieves.
  • If you fancy hiring bikes for the day go to Stage 1 Cycles, located in the beautiful old Hawes railway station. You could try the Tour de Yorkshire challenge over Buttertubs Pass. Or take it easier cycling around Hawes and the surrounding countryside.

"A delightfully cosy & yet luxurious cottage for 2 in the lovely town of Hawes. In the vicinity there is so much to encourage you to stay longer. There are several quality antique shops, cafes and pubs, traditional food & craft shops and some great walks in the surrounding hills. After all that effort you can simply retire to your enchanting Cottage with mod cons and tradition combined. A real treat for anyone who wants to escape into a bygone world if only for a few intoxicating days! Thanks to Karen (who provided some lovely local goodies for our arrival) the whole three days was a real joy. "

"Mill Fosse Cottage was a delight. Extremely cosy & comfortable; all the fixtures and fittings were top quality, and the kitchen very well equipped. The decoration was charming, lots of interesting artwork, but also quirky & fun. It was a nice touch that the mugs and many of the furnishings were made by local craftspeople, as were the tasty treats that welcomed us on arrival. Fantastic local walks and sights, but a snug fireside made us want to stay in by the fire on the chilly autumn evenings and listen to the roar of the river. "
