This hidden gem is tucked down a side street just outside the city walls. Originally a 1930s coal merchant's store, now light floods in through glass ceilings and the huge windows of the open-plan hall/living space and walls are adorned with an eclectic collection of modern art - which is constantly changed and also for sale.
Colourful, hugely comfortable bedrooms are two up, two down. Charmian and Mike live next door and they bring over warm croissants to accompany a generous continental breakfast. Each of the four rooms has a coffee machine and a kettle, and something bubbly in the fridge. Doors open out to a tiny central courtyard that's been cleverly fitted in, and you can take your breakfast out here on sunny mornings.
Walk to everything: the station, a massive choice of restaurants and bars, interesting shops, evensong - your hosts have all the best tips.

- We have parking for two cars in a secure yard with locked gates and can provide further parking for additional vehicles on street with a visitors permit (Parking can be very expensive in York especially so close to the historic core of the City)
