A listed Adam townhouse – elegance epitomised. Lofty rooms with polished floors and original features are dotted with quirky objets: bead-and-embroidery lampshades and chandeliers, bone china, a small mirrored Indian ceramic child’s dress – and your urbane host Richard’s accomplished paintings. His studio is at the bottom of the garden and you're welcome to pop in - you might be tempted to buy too.
Bedrooms have charm and fine linen; the claw-foot roll top in the shared bathroom cuts a dash. The guest sitting room with a fire is a welcome haven after a busy day. Breakfast is unbeatable, perhaps kippers, smoked salmon, a continental spread, homemade preserves or a full English with home-laid eggs and tomatoes from the garden.
Then head out to wander around historic Whitby, explore the North Yorkshire Moors, go on a fishing trip, hunt for fossils... and kick your shoes off on the Blue Flag beach.

- Union Place is an Adam Style Georgian town house, built in 1790. The current owners have been at pains to preserve the integrity of the property, whilst acknowledging that we are now in the 21st century.
- Very elegant, you are immediately aware of the houses past when entering the splendid hall with its ornate covings, and panelled doors, flanked by grandfather clocks, and plaster casts depicting figures from antiquity.
- Union Place was built at the height of the towns prosperity for a local banker. ln 1790 the house stood in splendid isolation, facing north south. The south facing gardens are still in the original terraces as when first laid out
- Only five minutes walk from the cliff top, and ten minutes from the centre of town and the harbour, Union Place is ideally situated, almost appearing aloof from the hustle and bustle of the town below. Both roadside and garage parking available.
- Whitby is a town of immense historical significance, and enables visitors to experience all aspects of the coast and surrounding moors. Blessed with a range of fine dining options to suite all pockets and palettes, within walking distance of Union Place.
- Union Place is now the proud owner of its own chickens, you can go and pick your own eggs for breakfast if you so wish !

"More than fulfilled expectations. The weather was atrocious but despite this, the warmth of our welcome, the glamour, comfort and central location of this impossibly beautiful Georgian house complete with gorgeous garden, homegrown produce and freshly laid eggs from incumbent hens made for a wonderful stay. We enjoyed a very large beautifully appointed bedroom, our own sitting room and a bathroom, complete with huge freestanding claw bath to die for. It was a wrench to leave our very urbane hosts for home. It even has parking! It does have four flights of stairs, so good knees necessary."

"This is a fabulous find!
Beautiful house and Wonderful hosts!
Immaculate decor, so light and airy and obviously a much loved house.
We were made to feel very welcome.
We thought we were the only guests as we never heard a peep from anyone else, so don't worry at all about the shared bathroom, which is huge and luxurious! Everything was spotless and fresh, the breakfast was perfect.
We took our little dog who was welcomed with hugs and kisses..as were we!!
One to keep to hand ready for our next trip! X

"Loved the house. Huge, airy room. We filled the double ended bath as soon as we arrived and the two of us languished in it for an hour.
Very clean, very beautiful. Host very happy to advise on local area. Would gladly return. Maybe fresh milk in the bedroom, Richard? That's my only, tiny teeny gripe."

"In early May visited this beautiful Georgian house in great location only 10 minutes walk from the harbour. Richard was perfect host with lots of suggestions for walks and places to eat. He also cooked a great breakfast to set you up for the day. We had a lovely room overlooking the garden and moors. Also loved the garden and seeing his artist studio - great pictures."

"A wonderful 2 night stay over the Easter weekend. A stunning house full of character and charm, just like the hosts. Richard and Jane welcomed us into their lovely home and really added to what was a great weekend. The house is presented so well with period features throughout and Richards beautiful artwork really adding a warm feel to the house. The large bedroom was perfect with a lovely view. The shared bathroom is no problem whatsoever. Please don't let this put you off. We really do recommend this place, it made our weekend in Whitby truly wonderful!"

"What an amazing house, run by really interesting people. I'd recommend staying here unreservedly. Lovely bedroom. One of those places with fascinating art work everywhere - even in the enormous bathroom! Superb breakfast. Beautiful garden to explore. Great company. DO NOT be put off by the shared bathroom - not a problem at all, and another loo on the same floor anyway. Pleasure to stay there. Sorry we moved on to York - should have booked another night here."

"My partner and I had a wonderful stay here. Both rooms are delightful, we were in the blue room with a huge bay window overlooking the well tendered garden and views of the moors. The adjacent bathroom is huge with a great claw bath and large walk-in shower. Richard is a good host, who served up a hearty breakfast and was very knowledgable on the local area. Lots of interesting artwork in a beautiful house. Will recommend to others. "

"Beautifully restored Georgian house, a pretty garden, with an enviable artist's studio. Our bedrooms were both attractively fitted out, and the Blue Room had particularity stunning views towards the moorland. The delicious, cooked breakfast, served downstairs in the kitchen, set us up for the day.
Richard was a charming and knowledgeable host, full of ideas as to where we could visit whatever the weather. The house is very close to all Whitby’s main attractions, and there are some fantastic restaurants for dinner.
We would definitely come back, and would thoroughly recommend it.

"An excellent 2 night stay here. Bedroom, the Blue Room, very spacious, bright and comfortable. Bathroom equally spacious with choice of bath or walk in shower. The house itself is full of features, watch out for the penguin and the Queen! Richard, our host, was extremely welcoming and very knowledgeable about Whitby itself and surrounding area. Breakfasts were superb. Altogether a very restful and informative stay. Highly recommended."

"What a joy it was to arrive at this beautiful house at the end of a day's driving! The rooms were simply breathtaking, so well proportioned, beautifully furnished and so comfortable. Our host was a pleasure to meet, breakfast fit for a king and the kids fell in love with Hetty, the friendly little hound. I would have no hesitation to recommend this B&B, it was fantastic value for money, I only wish we could have stayed another night."

"Union Place is simply splendid. A most beautiful property, which is clearly cherished by its owners. A relaxed atmosphere, where guests can come and go (including having exclusive use of a living room). Richard couldn't be more hospitable and accommodating, which extended to providing a bed in our room for our young daughter and graciously tolerating her fixation with his dog! The breakfasts are wonderful and bespoke. We have stayed here twice and are sure to return. Worth also noting that the location is great - only a short walk to the centre. Amazing value for money too!"

"A pearl amongst Whitby's jet! I still can't quite believe we were lucky enough to find this place! This is a beautiful, peaceful, restful and elegant house, with gorgeous bedrooms, a bathroom to die for and a scrumptious breakfast served by our very friendly and thoroughly helpful host Richard. An absolute delight to stay here, superb value for money, with wonderful rooms and luxurious decor to make our weekend truly special. Utterly, completely, thoroughly recommended, and we will be back - I think we've found a new favourite place!"

"An excellent stay overall. Richard was a lovely, warm, friendly (and v cultured) host who made us feel very welcome the second we arrived. The house is beautiful, absolutely spotless and breakfast was delicious. Lovely assortment of organic tea and fairtrade coffee in the bedroom to choose from and the fresh flowers in the bedroom were delightful. Having one bathroom to share with the other room was not a problem - there is also easy access to another toilet on the same floor. Attention to detail is second to none at this lovely establishment. We shall return! "

"My Husband & I have just celebrated our Wedding Anniversary, and what a way to celebrate it!! From the minute we walked through the door Richard (&Hetty - the family Dog!) welcomed us into their beautiful home. We were in the Blue Room, which is spacious with beautiful views. Despite having a shared bathroom, we never saw any of the other guests. Nothing was too much trouble for Richard with fantastic Breakfast choices & recommendations for eateries in the evenings. Richards chatted with us over breakfast about his passion for art, and we took a full tour of the garden & studio where he produces his lovely pictures. A definite return trip if we are up Whitby way again!!"

"My husband and I have just returned home after two fantastic days at Union Place.
We stayed in the beautifully decorated blue room with wonderful views over the moors. The rest of the house is also exquisite and we particularly enjoyed spending time in the relaxing guests' sitting room.
Our host, Richard, was incredibly warm and generous, as well as being great company over breakfast. We were delighted to be able to tour the garden and take a sneak peek at Richard's studio.

"Being novices in North Yorkshire, we appreciated not only the elegant and creative surroundings in Union Place, but also Richard's friendly determination to help us make the most of our stay with excellent suggestions for galleries, restaurants, walks and places to visit. It was very relaxing to be looked after so efficiently by an experienced host, whose imaginative breakfasts included the unforgettable Whitby Kipper Experience ("It stays with you" he rightly said) and home-grown raspberries, although fortunately not on the same plate."
