A 19th-century bothy in remote, rugged countryside on the edge of the Cairngorms National Park, for walkers, birders and seekers of peace

It's just you, two other houses, some Neolithic standing stones (the most northerly in the country) plus oyster catchers, curlews, lapwings, partridges and pheasants. From the front door you can only see one other building in the far distance. There's no formal garden as such, you step straight out into sheep-spotted countryside, but there's a little table and two chairs out here for warmer days and magnificent nature gazing.

Inside is cosy: deep windowsills, a sitting room with lots of books and original art - oils and watercolours by Anna's father - and a wood-burner to cheer (first basket of logs provided). The kitchen next door has the most lovely views from the window; you'll find milk, tea and coffee but you need to bring everything else for food. Stock up in Edzell, seven miles away, which also has a good fish and chip shop and decent pubs for food.

Walking is sublime and the North Esk river runs nearby for a paddle.

Puntos de interés sobre la región de
Anna Henderson:

  • Not far up Glen Esk, Colmeallie Bothy boasts the most northerly Neolithic standing stones right outside the front door.
  • The village of Edzell – the Jewel in the Crown of Angus – is only seven miles away. You can even get fresh fish on a Tuesday.
  • For some adventure, you can try Paddle-Boarding or Rock Climbing near Montrose, or further down the coast, enjoy the beautiful beach at Lunan Bay. Or play golf at Edzell’s two fabulous courses (18 and 9 hole).
  • At the top of Glen Esk, walk up Mount Keen, one of Scotland's Munros, or stroll round Loch Lee, where you will see amazing wildlife. Enjoy a lovely walk to the Queen’s Well, a memorial to Queen Victoria who drank from the well on her way to Balmoral.
  • Angus is home to some beautiful gardens and castles: Dunninald Castle Gardens, Pitmuies Gardens, Edzell Castle, Glamis Castle, House of Dun, to name but a few. Not forgetting our very own V&A Dundee, which, about an hour away, is well worth a visit.
  • Enjoy delicious pub and seafood at Catterline’s Creel Inn; or try The Drover’s Inn near Forfar for tasty food and wine. In Edzell, The Panmure Arms Hotel (aka The Panny) serves great pub grub. Or you could sample local gin at the Gin Bothy in Glamis.
