A Galloway bolthole on an organically farmed estate. Close to a clifftop with sensational views and 600 acres to explore

Negotiating a charming tangle of farm tracks to get here takes time, but when you reach this little Hansel and Gretel cottage you’re rewarded with wide sea views. To the other side are ancient trees, open fields and the ruins of a 13th-century castle.

Owners Ella and Finn restored the Georgian lodge from a crumbling shell. Cocoon yourself with iPod dock, DAB radio, books; buy organic meat from the estate, help yourself to their veg patch – the kitchen is super-equipped. The sitting room has a big sofa that can become an extra bed, and a tree-branch stair rail leads you up to bedrooms; a smaller twin room has castle views.

Walk along the cliffs to a sandy beach, hop in the car to shop or pub. Return for evening drinks in the courtyard, and a soak in the wood-fired hot tub while looking out to sea and stargazing. The estate also has a heated outdoor pool (open from spring), a tennis court and bikes to borrow.
