A fine country-house hotel with immaculate interiors and ambrosial food (dinner is included in the price). Coastal cliff walks wait

Lawns run down to the Irish sea, roe deer come to eat the roses, sunsets turn the sky red. This beautiful hunting lodge is one of the loveliest country-house hotels in the land. The food is ambrosial, the panelled bar is home to 150 malts, and you'll find a level of service you rarely encounter in such far-flung corners of the realm. There’s history, too. Churchill once stayed and you can sleep in his room, then climb into the deepest of baths and read his books. Immaculate interiors abound: gorgeous bedrooms, faultless bathrooms, a morning room where the scent of fresh flowers mingles with wood smoke. You’ll find beautiful art, the daily papers, games and books galore. Outside, cliff walks lead over to Portpatrick, peregrine falcons circle on high, bluebells carpet the hills in spring. When it’s stormy, waves crash all around. There’s golf on the coast at Portpatrick, then Luce Bay for miles of sand. John Buchan knew the house and described it in The Thirty-Nine Steps as the house to which Hannay fled. Remote, beguiling, utterly spoiling – grand old Knockinaam is simply unmissable.

David & Sian Ibbotson:

  • Knockinaam was built in 1869 as a hunting Lodge for the Hunter-Blair family from Blairquhan Castle, Ayrshire and is built in the style of the dower house on the Blairquhan estate.
  • Winston Churchill stayed here during WW2 to plan the D-Day landings with General Eisenhower. There are many historic sites in the local vicinity to visit.
  • The Mull of Galloway (40 minutes by car from Knockinaam), is the most Southerly point in Scotland and is even further South than Newcastle!
  • Gardens flourish in our wonderfully temperate climate. The local Logan Botanic Garden (recently recognised as a 5 star attraction), has many tropical species in its wonderful garden. Castle Kennedy Gardens and Glenwhan Gardens are also close-by.
  • Logan Fish Pond, a local attraction by Logan Beach, check out the Sealife in the area - both children and adults love this.
  • We have seven Electric Vehicle charging points for our overnight residents. Local fishing / photography trips available to book, golf courses & walks (maps available from hotel).
