A three-storey Victorian villa half way up a vigorously cobbled street in the centre of Culross, with beautifully choreographed interiors

Every square inch of the oak floors and much of the airspace has just the right amount of white between artwork that ranges from Victorian oils to enigmatic photography. Fig plants, dangling minimalist light fittings, mid-century teak and jute rugs add to the art gallery aesthetic.

Breakfasts are served on neat birch tables: homemade granola, fresh fruit compote, eggs from the local farm, Scottish jams and cheeses, coffee from Kinross. Evening charcuterie platters can be ordered, with locally-sourced cured meats, pickles, oatcakes and chutneys. A smallish guest sitting room can absorb two couples without much fuss. Bedrooms are on either side of a small landing and are kitted out with angle poise lamps, vintage Penguins and micro SMEG fridges.

There is an outdoor courtyard where guests can ruminate around a gas-fired fire pit surrounded by lush plants. The Red Lion Inn is a two-minute stumble down the slope.
