Broad Reach - Self-catering house in Isle of Skye
17 Loch Bay, Isle of Skye, IV55 8GD, Isle of Skye
Scotland,
Reino Unido
On a windy day you can see the waves pile into the bay and shake the boats on their moorings. It's a beautiful spot, and the cottage is in a lofty position over it all; views reach across one of the loveliest coastlines in Britain. Like so many new Scottish houses, its exterior is simple, but inside is awash with light and luxury, fitted with every aid to contemporary living, books, art and wood-burner too. It is the very modern opposite of an old and well-worn Scottish baronial building, or even a croft: crisp, wood-floored and leather-sofa'd. There is space galore, and the bedrooms, one up, one down, are sybaritically comfortable: sparkling lights, the finest bedding, sheepskins from the owner's craft centre. Given the strength of the winds up here, it is satisfying to know that the house is built to the highest eco standards, with triple-glazed windows and heat recovery. It is not far from Uig, the ferry port for the Outer Isles, and the islands within range are richly rewarding. Skye too is heavy with history and ineffable beauty – but you may well not want to budge from this glorious spot.

Lydia Hartwell:
- Broad Reach is situated on the Waternish peninsula overlooking the historic village of Stein and with panoramic view of Loch Bay and the Outer Hebrides of North Uist and Harris.
- Down at the lochside at Stein, there is the famous Stein Inn and the Michelin-starred Lochbay Restaurant. There are also various visitor attractions such as Skyeskyns, Skye's first five-star Visitor Attraction, art galleries and a pottery.
- At the end of the peninsula, visitors will find Trumpan with its ruined church and graveyard. Nearby is the site of the Battle of the Spoiled Dyke between MacLeods and MacDonalds.
- Trumpan is also one of the three Dark Sky sites on Waternish for gazing at the stars in the night sky. The nearest street light is over 20 miles away in Lochmaddy !
- Good walks abound from the long walk to Waternish point to forestry tracks overlooking the Trotternish peninsula.
- There are local legends with Annet's temple, a prehistoric site and the cat cairn that you pass not long after Fairly Bridge.
