Cosy hideaway for two surrounded by woods and wildflower meadows. Stroll to shops and pubs, explore historic Border towns or the coast

Read guest comments

Reached down a mile-long bumpy track from the main road, this shed once housed the heating for greenhouses on Cowdenknowes Estate and was rescued from ruin by Luke and Kate. It’s separated from their garden by a wildflower meadow and feels utterly peaceful and remote.

Find a generous basket of home-baked bread, jam, granola and eggs from the hens when available. It’s cosy next to the wood burner with board games or a book, or you can sit out on your deck overlooking the River Leader – have a barbecue in the enclosed garden or stroll 20 minutes through woods to Earlston for cafes and pubs.

It’s paradise here for outdoor lovers: walking and cycling routes leave from your door, horse-riding stables are a ten-minute walk away and you can fish on the River Tweed. Explore the great houses, abbeys and castles of the Scottish Borders; the coast and Edinburgh are about an hour’s drive away.

  • Enjoy stunning riverside or hill walks from the door. Why not walk to Melrose for a pub lunch and catch the bus back?
  • Fish the world famous River Tweed right on your door step. The owner is a fishing nut and is happy to advise on the best beats, just ask.
  • Go horse riding at the local stables a 10 minute walk away.
  • The cosmopolitan delights of Edinburgh are only an hour away, why not enjoy the new Borders Railway a beautiful train ride delivering you to the heart of Edinburgh
  • Historical houses, abbeys, castles and an award winning bookshop and café are all within a 20 minute drive.
  • The beautiful coast is just under an hour away. Check out the surf at the beautiful Coldingham Bay and enjoy a short walk to the harbour at St Abbs where you can treat yourself to a crab sandwich

"Let me see....should I write about the beautiful location? River side, tucked away, hens walking by as you enjoy a coffee to the sound of the wind through the trees and birdsong? Or maybe I should comment on the potting shed itself? Immaculate, cosy, bed sheets to die for, fire, decor that makes you feel like you've come home? No. None of that. I think the most important thing to point out is that The Potting Shed has a presence. A soul. If it was a person, The Potting Shed would rub your shoulders, after passing you a glass of wine, whilst dinner is simmering. Stress melting bliss. "

"Just perfect for what I wanted- warm, quiet and cosy for a Christmas "retreat" with myself and dog. Owner was so thoughtful and generous and the place has a lovely atmosphere which instantly made me feel relaxed. It's perfect as a place to stay on ones own- which is pretty unusual. Best footpaths ever!!"

"Sometimes places speak of being the ultimate in relaxation, but I can honestly say that the Potting Shed is worthy of this accolade. It is set far from the madding crowd within a walled garden with 3 adorable mad hens running riot and the River Leaderwater gurgling in the background. Inside, the property was furnished to an excellent standard with a lovely comfy bed. We slept better than we had for agess. There is easy access to Edinburgh, Melrose and numerous local walks from the doorstop, including the stomp to the summit of Black Hill, with stunning views for miles. It was perfect! "

"Beautiful location and a very comfortable and cozy place to stay. The owners have turned this former derelict outbuilding into fantastic accommodation. Tastefully decorated and very high quality furnishings including the comfiest bed and thickest towels ever! Welcome hamper is a lovely touch and was much appreciated after all the lovely walking and cycling in the area. Will definitely return. "
