On the hem of a hamlet in the rural heartland of the Auvergne is a traditional farmhouse turned carbon-neutral eco home. Bring a gang of pals or all the family for an activity packed getaway: there are peaks to climb (and ski), lakes to swim and rustic cuisine to enjoy. This part of the Massif Central feels like a well-kept secret.
The house is bright and unpretentious; kids and adults will feel equally at home here. Downstairs is a cosy bolthole for two (but there's an extra sofabed) and upstairs sleeps 10 (the master double has a freestanding tub in the room). The bigger kitchen is sleek, smart and really well kitted out. Get stuck into board games or table football, splash in the outdoor pool.
In summer the walks are glorious and there are mountain bikes to borrow. The slopes are easy-going on this volcanic plateau, perfect for children or beginners. You’ll find some cheese and wine waiting at the house, and you can barbecue on the terrace – the local beef is superb.

- In Saint-Flour you can fly with the birds in a hot-air balloon or ULM, a unique experience. Visit the historical city centre with its gothic Saint Pierre Cathedral (14th century) and typical food market on Saturday mornings.
