Manoir de Keranna - Self-catering house in Finistère

A 19th-century family manoir with bright red shutters sitting on its own with gardens children will adore. There's a warm vibe of faded grandeur throughout, and all is delightfully unfussy and laid-back; find high ceilings, original features, some antique furniture, some more modern but not cutting edge. Bedrooms - one heavy on the florals, the others simple - mostly face south for the views and feel light and airy, each has an en suite 'creatively' conjured up in the 70s so some of these are small, yet quaint. There's a lounge, a big dining room, an outdoor dining area on the terrace, steps leading down to the garden (swings, slide, trampoline, lawn and lots of lovely mature trees for shade) and a hot tub on the deck. You'll find a box of organic veg from the farm in the kitchen, and the little snug leads off here so you can stir stuff while the others watch TV. Carantec's wide sandy beaches are a short hop for picnics, sea bathing and water sports; the coastal path is near; there are books and board games for rainy days. Great fun for relaxed holiday makers and their free ranging kids.

Local points of interest from Joelle Bohic:
Puntos de interés sobre la región de
Joelle Bohic:
- The area has several bustling weekly markets: Carantec’s ,on a Thursday morning, sells local produce, including organic meat and vegetables all year round.
- Explore Carantec’s sandy beaches and rocky coves : there’s one for every activity, be it just making sandcastles (try the aptly named Grève Blanche), swimming and sunbathing, or practising watersports.
- Take advantage of low tide, too, to cross the causeway to Callot island, where you can relax on the sandy beaches, visit the exquisite little church on the hill, before discovering the ruins of an ancient fort at the northern tip.
- Hikers can follow the coast path all the way round the Carantec peninsula, at one point along the golf course, stopping for the stunning views- across to the Barnenez tumulus, to St Pol and Roscoff, and more especially to nearby Chateau du Taureau.
- Take your pick of historic towns within easy reach: wander round the old cathedral town of St Pol de Léon, once the seat of the Bishops of Leon, with some impressive buildings hidden down the back lanes.
- And after a busy day out, relax in the outdoor hot tub watching the sun go down over the Bay of Penzé. Actually, a dip in the hot tub is even more enjoyable on a crisp winter’s day
