Enter the courtyard of this sprawling, fascinating, labyrinthine château, to be welcomed by smiling Christine. Built and extended over five centuries - the 13th to the 18th - it stands alone in large leafy grounds.
Orchard-fruit jams are served at breakfast, at a huge table in the salon, and Burgundian dishes at dinner, accompanied by local wines. A day in the region's wine capital, beautiful Beaune (25km), is a must. Ask Christine for her favourite historic buildings, wine cellars, and restaurants.
Hiker heaven is a 40-minute drive, so head for the hills of the Morvan Regional Natural Park. Return for a stroll around the flower gardens, and turn in for the night. Bathrooms are excellent contemporary, bedrooms are sheer delight. Relish big beds, 18th-century furnishings, and stunning countryside views.
