Described in 1886 as "well-proportioned and elegant in its simplicity," Vaulx is as lovely now as then, and in the most beautiful position, in deep country, high on a hill with views that stretch to distant purple mountains. There's a panelled drawing room with chandeliers, a dining room with fresh flowers, antiques and strong, exciting colours.
The gardens are beautifully maintained: lawns manicured, box balls tightly topiaried, and there are quiet places to sit and read.

You're perched in gorgeous countryside so set off with a picnic for an all-day walk, cycle down to the village, St-Julien-de-Civry or visit magnificent Roman churches; Anzy-Le-Duc is a 20-minute drive. Float in the pool, take a book to the sitting room or terrace, sleep in light-filled rooms with views and not a hint of road noise. Wake to fresh sourdough from the village bakery, charcuterie, cheeses and jams with proper bowls of good coffee.

You're welcome to use the enormous kitchen if you don't want to go out, it's that sort of place.

"Our third visit and the highlight of our holiday. The chateau is perched on a ridge with a glorious view over the Charollais in all directions. It is sumptuously colourful, yet informal, and Marty the host is a hugely engaging character, overflowing with kindness and joie de vivre. On both evenings he lit a huge log fire just for us in the magnificent drawing room and laid us a table for our picnic by candle light, with music of our choice softly playing. For a memorable experience in every wonderful way it would be hard to beat. The croissants at breakfast were the best ever tasted. "

"Upon arrival Marty the most fantastic host apologised for a 3 bedroom suite upgrade !! He quickly made us feel at ease with our dog and she pretty much had a free run of the house with his 3 jack russell's . After a very generous glass of white we found not only our room but the whole experience 5 star . The hotel is very quirky and relaxing and although we were en route to Tuscany this was for us the best part of our break - we enjoyed it so much we booked again on our return journey some 5 weeks later . We were not disappointed and this time we're able to appreciate one of Marty's dinners "

"The peace, quiet and beauty of this off-the-beaten-path escape were unforgettable, as were the good people we met there--locals and other foreigners alike. Let no one say that the French are rude to visitors! We were treated like royalty and yet like dear old friends, all at once! Marty shared recipes with me from his exquisite dinner served under chandeliers and with open doors looking out over green velvet fields. Of all the magnificent meals we ate in Europe, Marty's was the most delectable in the most memorable setting. We'll be back! --Jill and Richard"

"Another magical visit. We shared the chateau with a couple who got engaged on the terrace that evening, and I cannot think of a more perfect place in which to be proposed to! Rosie and Roger"

"Another magical visit. We arrived in pouring rain, but what better consolation than to be welcomed by our warm-hearted host, Marty, and invited to cosy up by an enormous roaring fire before being served a candle-lit dinner in the gorgeous drawing room? Next day the sun came out and we were able to marvel at the wildflower meadows cascading down from the avenue of limes overlooking the rolling charolais landscape. Our fellow-guests that evening were a delightful young couple who became engaged on the terrace, and I can think of no more perfect little piece of heaven in which to receive a proposal! "12/06/2012 Dear Ann, As promised an updated version of my comments on Chateau de Vaulx May 2012 Another magical visit. Thanks Rosie What an amazing find! We were thrilled by our visit and long to return. Just before we arrived we had a slight accident involving a local motorist and- our French not being quite up to the occasion- we asked her to accompany us to the chateau to get help in translation. Marty was quite wonderful, smoothing ruffled feathers and charming everyone with so much warmth, kindness and impish humour that we all relaxed, and instead of it spoiling our holiday we felt so looked after that we look back on our visit as a highlight of our trip. Everything about Marty and the chateau is expansive and spectacularly memorable, and the love and flair with which he and Thierry have restored , decorated and furnished their home is heart- warming, as is the generosity with which they share it. The far-reaching views from their hill-top avenue are glorious: it would be very tempting to return and see their wonderful garden and grounds in all the different seasons. Add to that a charming landscape dotted with mellow old villages and Romanesque churches, grazed by charolais cattle and alive with birdsong: what more could you ask for?"

"We received a very warm welcome from Marty when we arrived at short notice during our "Sawdays Road Trip" from Somerset to Italy. Chateau de Vaulx is a fabulous building that has undergone some serious renovations in recent years. Being a building geek I was fascinated by Marty's account of the works and history of his home. We enjoyed lovely walks around the grounds and a delicious breakfast - top service, definitely recommended."

"We spent three sumptuous nights at Chateau de Vaulx. We were warmly met by host Marty who is greatly blessed with the gift of hospitality. No request was too difficult - breakfast was arranged on the terrace with warm breads, cheeses, and confitures and a stunning view - Marty booked lunch for us at a nearby Michelin-starred restaurant. The room was tastefully and romantically furnished and the grounds are a delight. We enjoyed a faultless visit."
