This big 1789 farmhouse deep in the country has been in the Coulmier family for two generations. Luckily, one half of the main house has been given over to guests with spacious rooms to match a child-friendly garden.
After a big breakfast of croissants, fruits, cold cuts and cheeses, embark on Valérie's village tour - a three-mile hiking path straight from the door taking in the surrounding countryside. After a day exploring there's nothing better than the terrace for relaxing - Valérie can rustle up a traditional meal for you if you just want to kick back.
You're in Champagne country here - the trail can be reached within 20 minutes of the house, so tick the big names off your list and meet small producers too. The town of Châlons-en-Champagne is a 20-minute drive with its museums, gardens, grand cathedral and churches. Take a cruise down the canal for an alternative view of the town.

"I loved this chambre d'hote! I knocked on the wrong door but this was not a problem for either the dog or it's owners! Neither was anything else including a request for a glass of champagne which was fulfilled after Valerie had raided her mother-in-law's cellar!This is a most welcoming place and the room and table d'hote were perfect. "Despite arriving very late, around 9pm, Valerie kept our meal for us and it was absolutely delicious. Our fellow guests had almost finished eating but they stayed and chatted to us and drank wine with us and it turned what had been a very stressful day into a really enjoyable evening. Our room was large, beautifully decorated and furnished, very clean and comfortable. Good breakfast, all in all very good and we'd be happy to go back for a longer visit."

"We were recommended to Au Pre du Moulin and were very glad we took up the recommendation. Valerie is a charming host and a superb cook, using wonderful fresh vegetables from the garden.
Our room was large, overlooking the garden, beautifully furnished and decorated with a very comfortable bed and bathroom with a great shower and lovely big fluffy towels.
The evening meal taken at a common table with other guests afforded interesting conversations helped by the generous serving of local wines. "

"We stayed here with our 5 year old on the way back from camping in Jura region. Made to feel very welcome on arrival and our son loved the trampoline and swings in the garden. Then served a beautifully cooked meal, wine, cheese and chocolate desert. Excellent nights sleep in the family suite where our son had his own room next door. Wish we could have stayed longer to explore more of the champagne region but only had time to stop at Mercier who do a great tour which kept the little one interested too!"

"Au Pre du Moulin was excellent in every respect. We arrived very late thanks to problems at the Tunnel, but we were immediately made to feel very welcome and given a lovely evening meal. The room was very comfortable, the facilities first class, and Valerie was a delightful host. We left the following morning after a very substantial breakfast, our only regret being that we only had time to stay one night. We are already thinking about a return visit when we would hope to stay a little longer. "

"This was the first night of our trip to Italy in an open-topped Morgan. We were welcomed warmly on arrival and Didier found us a safe place for the car in one of his huge barns whilst Valerie showed us to a shady spot in the garden where we could enjoy a much-needed cup of tea. Our room was large, cool (on a very hot day) and comfortable with a beautiful en-suite. We, along with the other guests, had opted for an evening meal which was a great success with all home-cooked (and mostly home-grown) delicacies and plenty of wine. It made for a convivial stay and a great start to our trip."

"What a wonderful place to stay. Such a welcome from Valerie. We stayed on the way and on the way back to a wedding. We felt like old friends on 2nd visit. Fantastic rooms. Every comfort provided. The food was fantastic. You must look at the vegetable garden where a lot of the food for dinner comes from. Valerie and her daughter Juliette were both so kind and thoughtful. We loved it so much my husband and daughters are staying for 4 nights in October whilst they visit some Champagne Houses. The best B and B we have ever ever stayed in. "We loved everything about Aupre de Moulin we were greeted by Valerie and her daughter and shown to the suite of rooms where the two of us were staying. The first thing that we liked about our accommodation was the spaciousness, a large bedroom with a very comfortable double bed, an en suite bathroom again very spacious; we had no need for the additional twin bedroom but all added to feeling of spaciousness.
Guests have the benefit of the shared dining room and access to the trrace for the use of guests, very welcome as it happens because it was very hot and we were able to sit outside."

"Enjoyed a 2 night stay in this beautiful country house. Welcomed by Valerie with a cold beer on the terrace - just what we needed after a long hot day driving. Our bedroom and bathroom was delightful and very tastefully furnished. The evening meal and breakfast was excellent and in good company with fellow holidaymakers. Valerie doesn't cook on Sundays but was happy to provide a lovely home-cooked quiche and salad - perfect. We could not fault Au pre du Moulin and hope to return."

"We own a property in Provence and so drive on a regular basis from Calais to Fayence, stopping overnight near Chalon en Champagne. We have stayed at Au Pres du Moulin a number of times, most recently in early December 2014. Valerie and her family have always made us feel most welcome . She is an excellent cook and always serves delicious, traditional French dinner and breakfast. The bedrooms are spacious and very comfortable.. I have no hesitation in recommending Au Pres du Moulin. "An excellent choice if you wish to tour the Champagne region with lots of useful tips provided by Didier and Valerie. A beautiful farmhouse about 40minutes south east of Epernay in the idyllic village of Clamages The farmhouse is spacious and the furnishings are to a very high standard. Valerie performs wonders with the cuisine and provides a traditional French breakfast, in preparation for a day of Champagne tasting. You may well wish to practice your French with your hosts but expect the response in perfect English. Well worth the visit as hotel accommodation is sparse in the region.."

"Valerie and Didier certainly deserve their reputations as two of France's finest hosts. Their very welcoming nature combined with an encyclopedic knowledge of the champagne area makes their farmhouse an ideal location to tour the area. On our request Valerie sent us to excellent local eateries for our days out and prepared great fresh salads with plates of local cheeses for our light evening meals. She directed us to one of the small champagne producers for tasting and purchasing of some fantastic bottles. Didier was particularly helpful in helping us choose our travel routes."

"We have stayed in Au Pre du Moulin 3 years running. Valerie and Didier are great hosts. The rooms are extremely comfortable and ideal for families like us with smaller children.
Valerie is an excellent cook: we enjoyed a delicious meal of sanglier (wild boar), local cheeses and home made cherry tart.
Breads, croissants and jams make for a very hearty breakfast. The children enjoyed their pasta tea and breakfast complete with hot chocolate and nutella."

"This was our second stay in this lovely B&B, the perfect stop over on the way back from the alps. With 2 teenage children, we stayed in the spacious and very comfortable family room, with lovely bathroom. The welcome was warm and friendly. The evening meal was homely and delicious, with good wine. The breakfast of good coffee, hot chocolate, breads and homemade jams was scrumptious."

Lovely rooms with thoughtful touches and charming hosts. We had a wonderful evening dining with our hosts and felt as though we were visting friends, even though we were struggling with our spoken French! Just lovely!"

"We spent a most enjoyable evening in this charming farmhouse. The room was very comfortable and we had our own sitting room to relax in. We dined en famille and enjoyed a good 4 course meal and wine- the cheese was fantastic, and the conversation good for French practice. We will be back many thanks I would certainly recommend this as a perfect stopping off point"

"This was our 4th visit, and have stayed in all the rooms, they are all different but equally lovely and comfortable, and the decoration is gorgeous throughout the house. The family are very welcoming and exceptionally helpful, the evening meal is superb - don't miss it! The breakfast is moreish with Valeries' homemade jams. We will be going back it's a fantatically warm and friendly place that we have fallen for."

"This is a good place to stop off en route or for a few days stay. You are made to feel very welcome by the very attentive hosts and nothing is too much trouble. The bedrooms are of a good standard and immaculately clean and well-fitted out, with good en suite facilities. We opted for the evening meal and had a delicious and good value dinner prepared by Valerie. The breakfast was also very good.
We would thoroughly recommend Au Pre du Moulin ans would definitely stay there again."

"We had a lovely stay at this house owned by the very friendly Valérie and Didier. The evening meal which we shared with the other guests around a large table was a great example of French home cooking, mostly from their own vegetable garden. The rooms are large, well equipped and very clean. WIFI is available. The house is only 10 mins drive from the route de Champagne (Cotes de Blancs) and the brother of the family produces a fabulous champagne grand cru (at a very reasonable price) which you should enquire about."

"Delightful accomodation and hosts. From the second we arrive to the second we left, we were made to feel realxed and welcome by the whole family. Delightful guest spaces, mixed with being invited into the Family Dining/Kitchen in the evening to sit down with the hosts for a delicious meal and expertly chosen wine. The Coulmiers welcomed an opportunity to practice their conversational English with us over Dinner. A definate place to re-visit on one of our drives through the Region."

"From our arrival we were welcomed as friends and made to feel settled with a drink after a long drive. Valerie's lovely cooking was shared by the four of us. The savoury cake was followed by mildly spiced fish - then cherry clafoutis. Didier is charming and enthusiastic about the land. Valerie enjoys a giggle and has a happy and relaxed relationship with their two charming girls. Home from home comfort."

"We loved Au Pre du Moulin from the moment we walked in and were welcomed as guests, not clients. It was very comfortable, and the food was delicious - we caught Valerie picking the vegetables for the evening meal from her own garden! The home made aperatif, elderberry wine, was sensational. We are only sorry that we stayed just one night. Very warmly recommended."
