Art-inspired B&B in a former silkworm factory. Swim in the eco-pool, feast on delicious food, explore Avignon, Arles and Roman ruins

Drive past vineyards and into a tiny hamlet, where Véronique and Frédéric's wisteria-clad 17th-century house is surrounded by cypress and fig trees and huge flowering oleanders.

The large bedrooms have en-suite bathrooms and look out onto a paved courtyard and the open barn opposite, where tables are set out for dining. For breakfast, homemade granola, yoghurts and patisseries, local croissants, cheese and ham and artisan-made fruit juices; dinners are 'bistronomie-style' and guests often choose to eat together after sharing an apéritif.

Spend lazy afternoons in the garden next to the swimming pool, which is filtered by UV lights using no chlorine or salt, with nothing but the sound of a trickling stream and birdsong. There are loads of walks and cycle tracks from the house; drive less than half an hour for canoeing on the Gardon River or for days out in the lively southern medieval towns of Avignon, Arles and Orange.
