2 Avenue de la Liberté - Self-catering house in Hérault
2 avenue de la Liberte, 34480 Autignac, Hérault
Languedoc - Roussillon,
Francia
In the heart of the village, you're just steps away from fresh breakfast croissants and a café/bar for sundowners. Usually Autignac is a sleepy sort of place, but the square gets lively on market days (Thursday) and match days when you can sit back and people watch from your shady terrace or go down and soak up village life.
This 1850 winegrower's house has been lovingly restored with high and airy rooms that invite you to relax. Find table tennis on the ground floor then up the winding, original staircase to a huge living room, comfortable with a wood-burner and sofas to stretch out on, a bedroom on this level, then three more up a floor. The four bedrooms share two generous bathrooms.
Visit hilltop Béziers (20 minutes) or smart Pézenas (30 minutes) for cafés, restaurants and markets. Portiragnes beach (30 minutes) has heaps of waterfront restaurants, or you can cook a feast in the smart kitchen and eat under starry skies.

Local points of interest from Sarah & Nick Croome:
Puntos de interés sobre la región de
Sarah & Nick Croome:
- A general store, "Docks Meridionaux", was run from this house from the turn of the century, and the painted entrance sign is still visible above the front door.
- Nearby Béziers is more than 2,600 years old and has a fascinating and turbulent history, steeped in blood and wine! Explore the spectacular Gothic cathedral, and the beautifully restored neo-Classical buildings of the Allées Paul Riquet and the Théatre.
- The wondrous nine locks of the Fonseranes on the nearby Canal du Midi, completed in 1697, enabled boats to be raised 22m, and goods to be transported as far as Paris. Explore by boat or cycle the purpose built canal 'piste' spotting egrets and grey herons.
- Visit 4000 year old St Thibéry, on the Via Domitia and an old pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela. A pretty village with a café, it also boasts (quietly) an Abbey, a C13th mill and a C5th fort. For good measure it throws in a volcano, albeit extinct.
- The sandy beaches of the Hérault are vast and golden with backdrops of grasses and scented wild herbs. Well-managed, blue flagged and spotlessly clean, at Portiragnes Ouest you can park adjacent and stroll through the protected dune system. Enjoy!
- No visit is ever complete without a trip to glorious Pézenas. Buy your supper at the superb food market on a Saturday morning, lose yourself in its labyrinthine medieval streets, and admire its ornate classical mansions, testament to a C16th golden age.
