La Baraquette - Self-catering house in Hérault
Chemin du Midi, 34200 Sète, Hérault
Languedoc - Roussillon,
Francia
The simplicity of this house is hugely appealing. Built into the hill overlooking harbour and town, it's an easy-going bolthole with great views and plenty of relaxing space outside: on the decking around the small pool, among the evergreen oaks and pines, on the dining terrace shaded by white sail cloth and in the gently swinging hammock.
It's a five-minute stroll to a fine restaurant, 15 to the bustle of town (birthplace of Georges Brassens, Paul Valéry and Manitas de Plata). Further afield: vineyards galore, the Canal du Midi, Montpellier only half an hour's drive.
You'll find logs and a wood-burning stove for when it gets chilly, all the basics in the kitchen and a Nespresso machine. Get fresh fish straight from the fishermen at the daily Criée, spend evenings on the terrace watching the glittering sea, feel very lucky to be here.

Pascale & Claude Hersog-Jones:
- A ten minute walk down to the covered market. Fresh fruit, local fish and shellfish, charcuterie and cheese... Buy from the stalls and eat on site at Diego's bar with a glass of Picpoul. "Ambiance" guaranteed when the locals start arriving for apéritif..
- A quick drive or a half an hour walk will take you to the beach. A long and wide band of sand that stretches as far as the eye can see. Perfect for swimming and sunbathing in the summer, for kite-flying and walks in the winter.
- Wander down towards the harbour, on the way stop at the Musée Paul Valéry which often has an interesting exposition as well the permanent collection. A little further down visit the emblematic Cimetière Marin whose occupants Rest In Peace facing the sea!
- Take a drive around the surrounding country-side to discover the vineyards of the Languedoc one of the world's largest and most diverse wine-making areas. Plenty of opportunities for wine tasting and buying a few bottles direct at the domain!
- Take a boat-ride along the canals that have given Sète the reputation of being the "venice of the Languedoc", or head off to the charming little town of Marseillan where the Canal du Midi arrives all the way from Toulouse. Great for bike or boat rides!
