Find ancient stone floors, creaking floorboards, hidden alcoves and a beam to duck; three eating places inside, four terraces and, cut into the steep cliffside, an infinity pool, underwater-lit at night. There’s even an old bell to summon people to lunch from pool frolics or barn table tennis. Bedrooms range from the tiny single in the pigeonnier to the large Romeo and Juliet room with balcony, of course.
The Tower has a twin room and a sofabed in its top-floor sitting room. Furniture is a mix of French antique and modern, the L-shaped sitting room is big enough to waltz in, the antique-dealing owners have an eye for the odd quirk (the semolina cave painting in the loo is by a member of the RA…).
You are five minutes from Luzech’s shops and market (25 on foot down the valley path) and spoilt for wine-tastings and gastronomic choice. The views sweep and soar and the walking is stunning in this wooded valley above the river Lot.

Local points of interest from Jill & Nick Bichard:
Puntos de interés sobre la región de
Jill & Nick Bichard:
- There is marvellous walking and cycling from the house. The Balcon de Luzech is a cliff path with a great view of the vineyards that leads down to the small town of Luzech where you can buy your croissants then walk back along the green track up the valley
- Roubignol is in the middle of the Cahors appellation controlee wine region. Most of the chateaux in the area do wine tastings and some of them have concerts during the summer
- Castles, caves and churches: the medieval castle of Bonaguil is very impressive and up river are the pretty village of St Cirq la Popie, the Chateau de Cenevieres with its alchemist's chamber and the stunning cave paintings of the Grotte de Pech Merle.
- Markets locally on most days: Luzech has one on Wednesdays, Prayssac has one on the concentric roads around the church on Fridays and Montcuq has a general one every Sunday. There are local small supermarkets and larger ones in Prayssac and Cahors
- Canoeing on the Dordogne is a one hour's drive away but worth it. You take a picnic and spend most of the day on the river with small castles above dramatic cliffs, have a swim in the clear water and are picked up and returned to your car in the evening.
- The Perigord is one of the gastronomic regions of France and although the Michelin starred Le Gindreau is amazing there are many good smaller restaurants and cafes in the area. Foie gras, truffles and confit de canard are specialities.
